We took my girlfriends cat to the Vet and his assessment was its cancer (tumor) and recommended to put him down. I suggested to wait as this Vet seemed not to really know what this was as he asked if the cat might have been run over or something didn't take blood work or anything.

He gave him a shot of something and a oilment to put on his mouth and asked to bring him back in a week to see if the swelling goes down if not it most likely is cancer (tumor) and needs to be put down.

The Vet said this type of cancer if you do surgery it will come back somewhere else in his mouth.

This cat is about 4 or 5 years old eats well and doesn't seem affected in anyway with this growth on his lower lip and shows no signs of being weak as this morning he jumped up on the kitchen counter and was trying to get at some can salmon my grilfriend had opened for us to eat.

I'm no expert but to me if an animal has cancer as bad as this Vet says he has it seems to me he would show signs of not wanting to eat not the things he is doing now as a healthy cat does. Other words I guess what I am trying to say is this is a cyst and not cancer but I could be wrong.

Does anyone here want to comment on this. Does this sound right to anyone reading this? If anyone has information on this type of growth or sounds like something they know a lot about please don't hold back information let me know please, my grilfriend does not want to lose this cat and I'm trying to do everything I can to help.

Thanks.

Mac

Im very sorry to hear this
No offense but I would definately get a second opinion. I can't beleive that a vet would "guess" that it is cancer without doing tests first (to find out for sure) and recommend putting the cat down. It may very well be a tumor..but may very well not be cancerous. If it were me I would get a second opinion and have test done to make sure its really cancer before making a decision and then if it was'nt too bad I would most likely take my chances and have it removed.
A few years ago a tumor was found in the mouth of my aunt's dog and it was cancerous. The vet told my aunt that it could be removed but there is a good chance that it may come back or may have already spread to other areas of her body. My aunt took her chances and had the tumor removed and the dog lived for almost 3yrs longer.

How well do you know this vet? Meaning..I take my pets to the same clinic every time, for many years now, and I know that he is a reliable, trustworthy man. If you don't have prior experiance with this vet, then I would definitely suggest a second opinion. It does seem kindof rushed to immediately suggest a put down....

Thanks for the replies. I have suggested to my girlfriend strongly for her to get a second opinion as I have asked around about her particular Vet that he is known to be one to put small animals down without really doing test simply because he assumes some don't want to go through the expense.

As for me or my girlfriend money is not a concern when it comes to the health of our pets as most know I had the sad experience last Saturday to put Tom Socks down as test were done and all indications were that Tom Socks would have organ damage if and that was a big if if he made it through the recovery. I spent close to $200 and would have went through the blood tranfusions at $200 a transfusion but my Vet suggested strongly for Tom Socks to put him down. They even sent me a sympathy card after my lost. As hard as that dicision was I am sadden but at peace that I did the right thing for Tom Socks.

As for Morris I feel a gut feeling there is hope for him.

I will keep you posted and again thanks for the replies and kindness.

I'm sorry to hear what you are going through with your cat. I strongly beleive that a second opinion is needed. I just lost my 11 year old cat 4 weeks ago today. The vet said that he thought it was cancer. He did bloodwork and took x rays and still wouldn't give me a definite diagnosis until an ultrasound was done. As it turned out, he passed away 2 days before the ultrasound was to be done. Sparky wouldn't eat or drink, lost weight and became very weak. He acted like a very sick cat, where your cat seems to be acting normally. Please seek a second opinion and insist that they do some tests before they throw that awful "C" word at you. Good luck and please let us know what happens.

Thanks Sparkycat for your reply. I'm sorry to hear about your lost. It is not easy loosing our little companions.

This morning I cleaned for my girlfriend Morris'lip and applied the Animax ointment the Vet gave to see if the swelling goes down. I am not really sure how this stuff works as after I put it on his lip he will lick and not really sure if this stuff will hurt him if it's ingested or enough will stay on to do any good.

It seems to look better but not sure. Morris still is eating good and appears to be more lively since I started doctoring his lip. He is such a good cat never once does he try to scatch or bite me while I'm cleaning his lip I will do this two to three times per day.

I had a bowl of Corn Flakes this morning and Morris insisted that he have some so I put a little in his bowl and believe it or not Morris that little tiger had Corn Flakes plus his regular food for breakfast.

I watched him closely and as a healthy cat would do after they are through eating he started cleaning himself. I just hope the swelling goes down. I know if I had a growth on my lower lip I wouldn't be as lively as Morris is that's for sure.

My gut feeling is this is not a cancerous tumor but we will just have to wait and see how he improves and keep him away from that Vet who wanted to put him down. I will keep everyone posted and again Sparkycat thanks for your reply it was very helpful indeed.

Do you have a local "emergency Vet" This may not be of need...But you could try them if you have one. I agree with the others of getting a 2nd opinion.... Dont give up, and keep us posted!

Hi Ilovemypets. No there isn't one in this area but if things get worst we may decide to take him to a larger clinic that is miles away from here.

Has anyone had experience with cat supplments that are suppose to help cats with any kind of tumors like fatty tumors or benign tumors or cancer tumors? The reason I ask is I came across a website that claim there supplment when reduse these tumors and rid them.

I am looking at all possible avenues for Morris but don't want to waste money on quackery.

Thanks Ilovemypets for your reply.
