I have a 1 year old male cat called Mustard who has been ill for the past 4 weeks. It started with vomiting and lack of appetite. We took Mustard to a vet and she treated him for dehydration and gave him a course of antibiotics. She said he was eating and was ready to go home. When we took him home he stopped eating again, so we took him back to the vet. Again he was treated for dehydration and we took him home. He was ok, eating fairly well, for 2 days. Then again he started refusing food. We took him back to the same vet and she force fed him. When he took him back home he vomited and continued to lose weight. We then decided to try another vet. We took him in last Friday and he also treated Mustard for dehydration and another course of antibiotics. He also dewormed him. He told us he has chronic gastritis. We were told we could pick him up last Tuesday, but as he lost even more weight we decided to leave him at the vet for another couple of days. We picked him up last night and he ate some chicken livers and drank water, but this morning he is again refusing food. He is skeletal and can barely stand up. Any ideas as to how we can stimulate his appetite, what can we give him? I don't want to lose my baby Mustard.. The vets seem at a loss as they only usually deal with large animals out here, convinced he should be well. Any help would be much appreciated.

I don't know how much help this will be, but it's worth trying to tell you what happened to me.

My husband and I got our cat Chloe from an animal shelter. We took her home and she had severe pneumonia. The vet put her on an antibiotic. Low and behold, the medicine made her anorexic! So, we had a shivering, two pound, deathly ill kitten. She wanted nothing to do with food.

This is what the vet told us (after several unsuccessful visits with another vet): once a cat stops eating, the almost forget how to eat. Also, their eating is very much linked to smell.

This is what we did: We took canned food, tuna juice, and a little bit of water. We took one of those medicine plungers (do you know what I'm talking about... a syringe without the needle) and filled it with the substance. We squirted the food into her mouth like giving her liquid medicine.

She fought at first with the eating. But, as we did it, she started to get the point and went to the food and finally began eating.

I really hope this helps you somehow. I hope to hear it turns out okay!

Did the vet recommend a special diet for chronic gastritis? Can you try one of those nutrient gels for sick cats like Nutri-Cal (I think thats what its called)? Its supposed to provide all the essential nutrients and high calories and is used for sick animals. At this point..I would try anything to get the poor baby to eat. You can also try jarred baby food (the types without added onion powder). I know some people use them to entice sick or recovering cats to eat. Good luck.

This may seem drastic, but if your kitty doesn't start eating real soon, ask about getting a stomach tube. my cat stopped eating and it got down to a life/death situation, so the vet put a tube in..he's handling it really well, and it's very easy to feed him (no pain for me or him) I only recommend this has a last measure, however. good luck

girl, i'm so sorry. It's gonna be ok, though. I know it will be hard at first, but the feeling that he's missing will fade soon.
