Hi, this is my first time posting, this is a great forum you have here. I'm wondering what some of your cat'(s) favorite toys are. I am interested because I recently took in a wonderful stray, and am trying to have lots of fun things around for her to play with in the house, so that she won't get bored and want to go hang around outside all the time.

We currently have 3 games that we play together, but I'd like to find more things to do that interest her.

- I dangle a string in front of her, and she goes crazy trying to catch it

- I roll a kitty ball and she chases it and tries to catch it

- I open up a paper grocery bag and gently tap on the end, and she dives in and starts swatting at the tapping sounds. The more I tap, the more she swats, and this can interest her for quite a while.

Do those sound like good things to be doing? Am I encouraging her to be aggressive, or are these things good harmless ways of her to get restlessness and energy out of her system?

I would love to hear what some of what you and your cat do to play together. What toys are the most popular with the kitties here?

Thanks in advance for any comments!

I admire you for taking on a stray they aren't always easy mine certainly isn't.
However his favourite game, other than driving my two more refined cats to distraction by chasing them, is biting the duvet 'monster' sit with her on your bed with your hand under the covers and tickle her tummy you'll soon get a good fight going, but be prepared to get a few scratches. He really loves it and will play for hours.
It is fine to let your cats aggression come out, it is natural for them to fight and catch things so why supress it?!
Another good toy is the inside of 'kinder surprise eggs' the plastic thing the toy comes in, they don't roll straight so they are more fun than a ball. I usually throw mine across the room and watch all three go hurtling towards it or throw it straight up in the air.
The other advantage of playing these games with your cat is not only distraction but it is also good exercise.

Lacy,
My cats enjoy all of the activities that you mentioned- it's wonderful that you spend that time with your new friend and care about making her transition into a new situation easier. One of my feline friends LOVES the rings that you pull off of milk cartons while taking off the lid- he's always right there waiting for it, then carries it around for a couple of days until accidently swatting it under something none of us can reach (if we ever move- I'm sure we'll find treasures of milk carton rings- ha!) anyway, you might want to see if they interest her too.

Isis, the duvet "monster" game sounds like great fun, I'm going to try something like that with Luna. It was especially reassuring to hear that games like these are a good way for a cat to get out some of their natural aggression and also a good form of exercise.

carrie, I'm going to see how she likes playing with the milk carton rings, I never would have imagined that a cat would find them interesting! But being that this is the first cat that I've ever had (I was always a dog person) every day brings a new discovery about what cats like or dislike.

Thanks to both of you for all your comments!

Playing with a cat is one of my most favourite things to do after a hard days work!
I think I enjoy it as much as they do even though most days I look like an axe murderer had a go at me.
I have just bought a falconry glove, ie very thick leather and goes up to the elbow. It is great for fighting with your puss cat and they seem to like the taste of the leather too.
I think it is important to let your cats get their aggression out and have found it stops them trying to eat your furniture, scratching walls and funnily enough stealing food of the kitchen tops.
In the end they need entertainment just as we do and if its not provided they will make their own.
My cats are housecats so they do not get the environmental enrichment that most cats get from going outside so play keeps them happy, healthy and good tempered.
Another good way to keep your cats entertained is to feed them using balls that dispense the food and hiding their dinner from them, especially good if you cat is overweight.
It is just more of a natural way for them stray cats have to work hard for their food and are thus far more healthy.
On this note though anyone got any ideas how I can stop my lovely little kitten from taking things out of my kitchen bin? I wouldnt mind but he ends up with an icky tummy.

I have a 7 month old kitten, a 1 year old kitten and an 8 year old cat. They all like to play with like this fishing pole type of thing. It's like a long stick with a string tied at the end of it and it has a bright red feathery thing on it. my kitten (the 7 month) loves to play with my hair and she even plays with her tail. have fun with ur kitty.

Our new kittie is spoiled with toys but her favourites are the cheapest things. She really loves to attack and chew on straws and she loves paper bags. (I definitely recommend the straw). Her favourite toy is "Mr. Green" which is just an old green sock that I tied in 2 knots and shredded the stretchy ankle part of the sock with scissors so that it look like an octopus. She loves to attack the frays and chew on the knots. Kittens go for the cheapest toys.

Hi!

I use a laser pen with my cats - they go nuts! It lets me rest for a while and still play with them. It works great on dogs and my baby trys to catch the laser point as well. Just be careful not to aim the laser light near or in their eyes as it can damage their retina.

I also use an old sock and stuff it with catnip. Another game we play is with tinfoil. Roll it up in a ball and they bat it around forever. My cat also likes balloons - god knows why. It scares the hell out of the other cat - but I blow them up (don't tie it) and let them go and she'll chase the deflating balloon around.

Why does it always seem the cheapest toys are the most interesting?? )

You can't get better than a cardboard box. Its true we spoil our new kittens with expensive toys that they take one look at and then play with something like a paper bag or, my kittens favourite, some paper screwed up into a ball. At home we have a paper recycling box which both my kittens are trying to empty just as fast as I fill it. It's the same with kittens as with children the cheapest toys are the best but we will continue to spend money buying toys for them. I know I do.

I own 5 cats and there are a million strays. The 2 kittens really enjoy strings of paperclips, feathers, and cardboard boxes to jump on. I bet your cat would like these to. With the string of paperclips, it also helps to hook a bell at the bottom.
For my other 3 cats, they find it fun and enjoyable to chew on the brush (Especially when I'm trying to groom them!). They often pounce on it and grab it in their paws, and sometimes run off with it!
Try getting all sorts of toys for your cat, like catnip, mice, different types of balls, and they even started making 'Cat Gyms'!
Good luck!

A few weeks ago I moved my refridgerator out a bit in order to clean and I found what seems to be my kitties secret treasure chest of toys. There were several McDonalds straws, some toy balls we had bought for him a few months ago, and various scraps of paper. The thing that really surprised me were the collection of unwrapped (and un-eaten) Hershey's Kisses. I remember having some Kisses in a bowl a while back, but I put them away after I heard that chocolate can be dangerous to cats. I guess he got ahold of some before I could hide them, but he didn't eat them so I think we're OK. I'm just amazed that he could get the foil wrappers off, and I'm not sure what would possess him to do so since he clearly didn't want to eat the chocolate.
....Needless to say, he's the strangest cat I've ever known.

Through all of the cats I have they seem to have the favorite 2 toys...
the little mice that rattle (the rattle inside is important) and plastic shopping bags tie up into knots!!! They always go crazy for these and will not only play fetch with me but will toss them around and catch them alone or with the group of them.
One of my cats adore grapes of all things! he like to chase them and bounce them until they smush - it always leaves a mess, he loves it though
