I recently got a 4 year old cat from the Humane Society. I brought her home and for the first couple of days she was doing great. The fourth day she started sneezing. By the 6th day she was drooling profusely and breathing hard. I took her to the vet (she had already been the day I got her) and he gave her antibiotics. (Amoxil) I was not satisfied with their disinterest, so I got online and found a website that mentioned Gentocin breathing treatments. I started giving her breathing treatments 3 times every day. She refuses to eat, will only drink. I have been force feeding her, and giving her nurti-cal. (when she will let me) and I have tried at least 9 different kinds of foods. (Iams, Purina, 9-lives, Special kitty, Science Diet, Tuna, Sheba, whiskas.....) I am at a loss. She was hospitalized overnight to be rehydrated. She still refuses to eat. I love her so much and just do not understand. This is my first cat and I am so frustrated. Any advice???????? She has also been hiding under the bed,any where she can get away from people. I have spent over $ 300.00 in vet bills and they dont know what is wrong.....

Im confused, did you stop giving the Amoxil or did you finish it up? How long was she on it for? How long has she been sick like this?
In being sick, she probably cant smell very well which is most likely why she is uninterested in eating. Sense of smell has a direct impact on cats eating habits.

I finished the Amoxil and we started on the Clavamox. This is the beginning of the second week of the clavamox. With the Amoxil she developed Pleuritis and that is when she was hospitalized. She has been sick for almost 2 weeks now. The vet has given her IV fluids, steriod shots, appetite enhancers, everything he knows. She hides under the bed and only comes out when I force her. I have only had her for a little over 2 weeks. Like I said before, this is my first cat and I dont know what to do. When I first got her (the first day or two) she meowed, purred, sniffed around, and acted "normal". Now hse only lays there.. The vet says that he does not know why she wont eat......

Sounds like an upper respiratory infection- feline viral rhinotracheitis, or feline calicivirus. I would strongly recommend getting hold of a copy (from library or bookstore) of Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats, and reading pages 317-320. Perhaps you could look into finding a holistic vet in your area- they seem to be more thorough in their treatments- and are not so quick to prescribe antibiotics for everything. If you can't find the above mentioned book- look these viruses up on the internet. Let us know how your cat is doing in a couple days...I do hope everything works out well.
