Last week I travelled with my 9 year old cat from New York to Hamburg, Germany, our new home. I accidentally over dosed her on the tranquilizers prescribed by her vet, but she was never completely out and not only seems to have recovered nicely from twelve hours in her carrier, but appears very happy and comfortable.

She took to her new litter box just fine. She is unafraid of visitors--unusual for this scaredy cat. She runs and jumps and gets into mischief as normal. BUT: she hasn't eaten any food in the six days since our arrival.

One issue is that she ate a three foot long piece of plastic string (used to tie garbage bags). Part of it has come up in vomit, which she's been doing a few times a day. But no sign of the whole thing yet. I'm not sure if the plastic being bio-degradeable makes a difference.

I also wonder if maybe she just doesn't like the food here. I've bought the same brand she ate in the states, but it smells a bit different. The real test was an offer of chicken from my dinner plate, which interested her for a second but was turned down.

She still drinks water as normal and there is feces in her litter box. She's lost a few pounds, but nothing else about her is different.

Any ideas?

I think you have probably given your kitty enough time to "'adjust" to the move. Loss of appetite, particularly after eating the string means you should take her to a vet the EARLIEST you can get an appointment. Don't wait. Something may be going on in her intestine...a blockage, infection, but having no appetite and loss of weight are serious symptoms and need to be checked out ......let us know what happens. We all love cats here and hope she'll be fine!

Thank you, seabiscuit for your reply. I admit to holding off on the vet because we're low on cash due to the expense of moving overseas. And she's acting so normal. We got some "digestive goo" at the pet store to aid in moving things through to the end, but tomorrow we go to the vet.

I'll post what happens. Thanks again.

Michelle-
I think I would have done exactly the same thing as you have....waited a week or so, particularly since your kitty's behavior otherwise is okay. Would have put it down to the stress of the move. And maybe that's still an issue. But that string thing....that's a bit worrisome given that the symptoms appear to be gastrointestinal. So good luck at the vet. Please let us know what they say, since any news, good or bad, helps us all in the long run. I have a feeling that your kitty needs the rest of that string to come out! or antibiotics for an infection caused by it......

I'm happy to report that Persephone the Cat ate a whole bowl of food this morning. This is such a relief because the money for a vet was going to have to come from funds for people health insurance; though now I believe I will invest in pet health insurance as well.

I think the only thing that could have made the difference must have been the digestive goo (for hairballs and whatnot). She didn't want to take any from my finger but was highly annoyed when I put some on her coat and licked it all away.

This morning there was the normal pestering for food and after adding a little irrisistible tuna to her regular dry food, she ate the whole thing up.

Best side-effect: I found this board in my panicked search for answers. Thanks again, and see you soon.
