My cat Beary, who is 9 year old passed away yesterday. She went to get an impacted tooth removed, which was already loose. She died due to complications from the anesthesia. My heart is broken. Please, don't let any vet talk you into putting your cat under general anesthesia for just routine cleaning. There are services that clean without using anything. So. California call Canine Care 800-242-9966 or Houndstooth 877-309-8849. I used both services before. If you are outside the So. California area, I am sure you will find someone closed to you. They did a great job. My 2 remaining cats will get their teeth cleaned every 6 month. Please share this message with any cat owner you know, and ask them to share it too. Maybe we can save some cat lives.

I am so sorry for your loss of a wonderful cat. They are our best friends and to lose them under such awful circumstances is even more terrible. I too never knew for so long that indeed one need not put an animal under anesthesia to clean teeth, however much a vet leads you to believe this must be so. I did not lose and animal, as I cancelled the appt before hand and now use pet toothpaste. You know, it only makes sense too, as we aren't put under general anesthesia for our teeth to be cleaned. Thanks for putting this for others to learn from, we do so much believe in vets on everything, and now, it allows us to question the action. Again, I am sorry for this loss, God bless.

I am vey sorry about the loss of your pet. My cat was diagnosed with gingivitis and I was told by the vet that he would need to go under anesthesia to have his teeth cleaned. I have been researching this and have found out that many pets die from anesthesia complications after teeth cleaning. I talked with the vet assistant and found out from her that she would be the one who would administer the anesthesia to my cat and would be doing the dental work, which is quite scary since I found out from her that she has no experience at all. I think that I will find someone here in FLA who does non-anesthetic teeth cleaning on pets.

I am very sorry to hear about your poor kitty. I don't know what I would do without my little baby. When I took my cat in to the vet to be neutered he had to be subjected to anesthetics (sp??). The doctor offered to give him a blood test in order to find out if he had any problems that would cause difficulties or death from anesthetics. My kitty didn't get the test because he was very young at the time and the vet said that it is a bigger problem with older cats. I just wanted to let everyone know that this test is available and obviously its something you will all want to ask about the next time your kitty has to visit the vet.

I am also sorry about the loss of your cat. That is very sad. My cat just had his teeth cleaned a couple of moths ago and he was very overweight and middle aged so the vet had an EKG on him through the routine. That I feel, is an important aspect of it. He would be too unruly without the anesthesia and unfortunately some are like that.
