Hello. I just adopted a 2 yr old cat today named Chandra. I brought her home and my 15 year old cat, Pepper, is totally unfriendly--she hissed and all that. Chandra returned the unfriendliness by hissing.
Now they both occupy different spots in my little studio. Both have their own feeding stations and litter boxes.

What should I do? Pepper is normally real affectionate but she's very volatile with Chandra. Pepper has poor eyesight and she is somewhat deaf in her right ear--I'm worried she'll stumble upon Chandra and they might fight. Right now, Chandra isn't challenging Pepper and just hides or scurries away.

They HAVE NOT fought yet. Both are spayed.

Should I put one in a cage and place it across from the other cat? For an hour or so? How should I handle this? Thanks so much for whatever advice you can give. Jack.

Think of it this way Jack. You have lived in your house with your wife or SO for a long time. All of a sudden she brings in another man. How would you feel, ok this may not be the best ever analagy. Cats are terratorial animals. None of them get alone the 1st time they see one another, this could last for days, weeks, months, and sometimes forever, i find that opposite sexes get along better becuase of the terratorial differneces. But now you have 2 females. Let them get used to one another. Hey want to make it a bazillion times worse? Force them to be together. I can promise you, not only will they hate one another, they will hate you. Eventually they will get along. Just give it time. By the way you should have kept them apart for atleast 2 weeks to make sure that neither had any contageous diseases, adn it also makes for a better introduction.

Apparently, your 15y/o cat feels threatened by the new comer. Slowly introduce each other. I had 2 female cats, that never got along. Both wanted to be "queen" of the house. Over time they accepted each other, but were never friends. Good Luck Jack.
