Abscesses - I can't stress how much I hate that word! The sense of dread associated with it is even worse. I have been through this before with Stone Bruises, but have never from a high nail from the farrier. What I would like to hear from anyone that has gone through a high nail abscesse from a farrier what the length of reoccupation time and what are the long term affects? The other important fact of this is that this horse is an OTTB, and his hooves were in bad shape; long in the toe, etc. As for treatment I am doing hot/warm Epsom salt and Benadine soaks twice a day. Then packing the small nail hole with a cotton swab soaked with benadine, poulticing the hoof sole, then wrapping the hoof so no dirt gets in. Giving him bute twice a day, and starting him on antibiotics today just in case. He is eating, drinking, pooping, and has no fever, but there is deffinate swelling in the tendon today. Thank you kindly IP: Logged |

i would be worried of secondary infection which could happen in the tendon itself i would have a vet give it the once over just to make sure all is well your doing everything right but still safer to get advice from a vet. sounds like the farrier has done something wrong for this to happen so i would also make a complaint to him about what has happened and state that your not happy then you can give him the results from the vet will he compensate you for what your poor horse is going through and the worry this is putting you through keep us posted of how he is doing hope it gets better mike IP: Logged |

Thank you Mike, the vet is coming out tonight as soon as I realized this was no oridinary abscesse, if there is such a thing. The farrier is aware and feels just plain awful, so there is not much left to do in that deptartment. I am very worried about lasting long term affects though. But all I can do is wait...I have had the poor animal less than a week and feel completley responsible for what has happened... The vet came out and put the poor guy on antibiotics; his swelling in his leg has gone down, and will continue to do warm epsome sokes 2x day. Does anyone know if it is possible to have released all the abcsess bacteria but still be lame from the impact of the nail on the blood vessel? I am just concerned that he is still contiunes to be lame even though we have opened up the hole to release the bacteria, but wondering if there may still be some in the hoof? Thank you IP: Logged |
