My thoroughbred is under-weight. The owner of the barn said she is too small (15.2H) to recieve more grain. At the time, she is getting 4 LBS. of grain. She works a hard workout 5-6 days a week. Teeth are floated and she is wormed every month. How much should she be eating grain wise? IP: Logged |

1st off how did she become under weight as to get her back to her normal weight the food intake should be gradual the pony i rescued a few years ago was starved to the point you could actually see his ribs and bones i had to feed him 2pound of oats mixed with sugarbeat and garlic 3 times a day and then slowly increased the food and dropped the amount of time he was being fed a day i did this for about 6 months and he gained his exact weight with your horse being under weight she should not be put throught to much hard work as this can exhaust the horses energy and fat reserves so take it easy plenty of fresh fruit and vegtables can also give u a helping had in gaining her weight back if you need any more advice email me at boro_lad1976@hotmail.com hope this helps mike ... I agree, weight gain should be gradual and kame sure the horse is taking in more calories than are being used. A friend has a similar problem with keeping weight on her TB mare and has found Calm and Condition to be a good feed as it has certainly helped gain condition but without extra "fizzy" energy.
