My horse Rocky was in a barn fire about 2 years ago. He got severe smoke inhalation damage, but was not burned. Every since I moved him from our place he has lost weight so dramatically he looks like a bag of horse bones. He has always beena fat sassy guy, and now I do not understand. I feed twice a day and have moved him to a nice stables. Since he is so skinny he gets picked on. He hates being in a stall, but I have no choice to leave him penned while the others are out. I have had people call the humane society because they think I do not feed him! I really need help. My vet floated his teeth and says he doesn't really know what the problem is. Maybe some of you guys can help me. Please,I have had him since he was 6 mos and now he is 10. Please help. IP: Logged |

did your horse have a regular buddy that was lost in the fire. he could be homesick. any change in his hay qulity it is the horses main feed. or work scedule. if the hay qulity dropped and the work increased that would make a big difference.if he was mostly pasture kept before he may really miss the fresh grass. how fussy of an eater is he. good luck ps how do the other horses in the new barn look are they sleek or plumpish. When Rocky was at home he had free run of a 30 acre coastal field. I was his best friend. He has always been the underdog, therefore he buddied up real tight with me. I go and feed everyday and excercise him in the round pen, but he is so skinny I don't ride him. After he moved I was told by the vet he may just be depressed. That is obvious. But for over a year now? The other horses pick on him and he does not fight back. I am his buddy. He hates being in a stall and I have to keep him in his stall while the majority of the horses are in the field so he doesn't get hurt. I used to run barrels on him when I was young, now my 2 year old rides him, for short periods of time. His feed has not changed except he is being fed more. I have had him since he was 6 mos old and he is now 10. He has always been like a mack truck, now he is like a sack of bones. I don't know what to do. Any advice. I have not ever had this much trouble getting weight on a horse not even the rescued horses I've had. IP: Logged |

That sounds so scary, could you imagine being in that barn fire. I'm with you on the fact that he's obviously depressed, it's so sad. You know he had such a scary experience, I've never actually had to deal with a depressed horse so I don't know what you should do. I just want to offer my condolenses Maybe you could try massage therapy, I once saw a professional do that for a horse when I was in Colorado. I guess I would just tell you to keep spending as much time as you can with him. Tell him how much you love him. Talk to him and spend time with him. Good luck, I hope he gets better. IP: Logged |

If it is available to you try using super gain and omalene 300. Also try having the vet do some blood worm on him and check for heart worms. Also have you ever tried using the strongid that you mix with their grain for ever day use. This seemed to help our mare when we had the same problem. Good luck to you and Rocky. IP: Logged |
