Have a 3 yr old stud that no matter what I feed him, won't gain weight. Yes, he has been wormed regularly. He gets grain, alfalfa, bluegrass mix hay, and pasture grass. Anybody got any idea what's wrong? Thanks.

Does he run about a lot? He is a stud. And, when was the last time he had his teeth checked by a horse dentist, and no, not all vets are qualified to file the teeth down. No matter how much they will eat, no weight gain, and most often, have a lot of grain/feed on the floor where he has to eat, due to poor mastication.
Another thought, his bloodline possibly being thoroughbred, he won't gain much like an old typy Bull quarterhorse would. Are his bones fine? Or heavy? Parents?
I would have the teeth filed first, and then wait a month and see any weight gain or not. good luck.

i am having the same problem with my 4 yr. old stud. we keep 5 round bales of fescue hay in the pasture at all times he gets grass, 4 scoops of feed plus 8 oz of liquid fat a day. we worm him regularly he is up to date on all shots and seems all around healthy. hes not overly energetic so i dont see how that could be the problem and his dam is a very stocky (even a little on the hefty side) quarter horse, while his sire is around 17 hands and also very large. no matter how much he gets to eat he doesnt gain any weight he doesnt lose any but hasnt gained any either but he is a poor weight to begin with. hes not sickly lookin but he doesnt look completely healthy. another thing is he has always been small boned i guess u could say.
