i have an irridescent shark in a 30 gallon tank now. he is 4inches long , how long can i keep him in this? and when should i be looking for a bigger tank? as i dont wanna stunt his growth or harm him in any manner . thanks for any info.

Yes you need to get a bigger tank because the irrdescentd shark can grow up to 1 meter but I would not worry until he/she is up to 7 inches long.

Hi heman37, The general guideline I use is when the fish's length is 1/4 to 1/3 the width of the tank it is time for a move. In a 30 long the width is 36". When the fish gets 9" to 12" it's time for a move. In a 55 gallon the width is 48". When the fish gets 12" to 16" it's time for a move. Fom this you can see that if your fish is in a 30 gallon tank and is 12" long you probably want to skip right past a 55 gallon and go to something larger. Keep in mind what the mature size of the fish will be. I have found that once a fish reaches 1/3 the tank width their growth starts to stunt.
