HI, IM LOSING 2-3 INCHES OF WATER EVERY 2-5 DAYS, I HAVE A HOOD SO WHY IS IT EVAPORTING? CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT I CAN DO TO STOP IT FORM EVAPORATING? THX

i would suggest to lookoveryour tnak, u mite have a leak sumwhere....if so, get some silicon to patch it up.

HI, I CHECKED THE TANK FOR ANY CRACKS BUT THERE ISNT ANY, AND IF THERE WERE CRACKS WATER WOULD BE AROUND THE OUSIDE OF THE TANK RITE, THE OUTSIDE OF THE TANK IS ALL DRY.

I have several tanks that evaporate quickly. It depends on a few factors as to why. Is the hood a tight fit? As earlier mentioned the lighting and even the type of filter all play a factor.

im not sure but maybe 14 hours a day. does having the light on reduce the evaportion or not

having that light on alot during the day duz make the water evaporate faster, and also the room temp mite help to evaporate the water more quickly. i would say reduce the amount of light per day to about the amount of hours the sun is out in a day, so the fish have time 2 relax and sleep. also, this would help 2 reduce algae, if u have ne problems with it.

How warm is the room and how long do u have the light on for? (Including how hot it gets and how close u put the light to the tank.) That might be the problem.

Srry about last reply it was a little too late, but i think that u should have the light on for about 1-2 hours a day maybe, although im not a fish expert.

What kind of light do you have in your aquarium? Is your aquarium also near a window? What's the temperature in your house? Do you have a heater in your aquarium?

If it's near a window, you really on't need a light on a few hours, but even then it doesn't matter. I leave my aquarium light on from 8 am till 10 pm with no problems.

Heaters in aquariums can cause a lot of evaporation. Also, if you are using power filters, they can often cause a bit of heat if they aren't working properly.

Just for another check, look around your aquarium again. Sometimes there aren't cracks in the glass but the glue holding the pieces together might be damaged and can cause leaking.

I found that out the hard way with my old 15 gallon :/

I find that my house is really dry especially during the months where I have my heat on....it tends to evaporate the water in my aquarium. I lose about 1 1/2 inches about every 5 days. Sort of acts as a big humidifier!

I lose a fair bit of water due to evaporation as the air here in the praries is pretty dry. If you're not 'finding' water, it's probably not leaking. As for the evaporation, I wouldn't get overly concerned about it. The lid shouldn't necessarily be airtight, the aquarium needs some way to circulate the air. As an aside, I've caught my parents cat on top of their aquarium drinking from the discharge of the filter. He must like the fish flavouring

YEAH THE TEMPERTURE IS AT 84 DEGRES AND LIGHT IS RIGHT ON TOP OF THE TANK (HOOD LIGHT). 1-2 HOURS, DANG I USUALLY HAVE IT FOR HALF THE DAY.

I HAVE A FLOURSCENT LIGHT (12 WATTS), THE TANK IS RIGHT NEXT TO A WINDOW, DOES IT MATTER? I DONT KNOW THE ROOM TEMP BUT I KNOW ITS NOT WARM, KINDA COLD. YEAH I HAVE A HEATER IN MY TANK.

Hi Azianboi343, 84 degrees is just a little too warm for your fish and does cause quite a bit of evaporation. For tropicals I like to run my tanks between 78 - 80 degrees. This keeps their metabolism high without undue stress. It also helps keep down the occurence of ick as long as the temperature is kept stable. DON'T drastically lower the temperature. Just 1 or 2 degrees per day until you get it down to 78. You will have to keep an eye on the temperature when you do. Since it is sitting in front of a window you may get more temperature variance when you lower your heater setting. Remember glass will amplify the heat from sunlight. With the glass from the window and the glass on the tank you have a virtual magnifying glass warming your tank.
