I have3 Cory cat and their whiskers are being "eaten" off by what I am told is a bacteria. In the past this has eventually killed the Corys. Local fish stores said dump the tank and clean and start all over (also destroy all the fish in the tank due to the contamination). What medication can I use to kill the Bacteria? I have tried Metronidazola and Furazolidone with no results.

do you do water changes and put them in a hospital tank?

A good forum to go to would be here: http://pub36.ezboard.com/baquariumbbs

I have had a situation like that in the past. ich, fungus, tail and mouth rot, popeye that didn't seem to want to go away no matter what. also had the whisker disappering bit.
you need to vacuum the heck out of hte tank. 50% water change. even move the plants to vacuum around them good too. basically stir the gravel as you go.. everywhere. move rocks, deocorations, everything. then you need to change the filter and carbon! put some salt in your tank. 1 tbsp for 10 gal.
this did miracles for me where medicines had stripped all the good bacteria away in my tank, I believe. I find weekly water changes to be much easier and cheaper than doing the medicine thing.
good luck

I do 50% water changes every week, vacuum the tank same time clean one filter at a time (have two pumps on a 30 gal tank)as I dont want to upset the ph of the tank too much by starting with clean filters and having to "age it" all over. I have another 5 gal tank with other corys that gets 25% change once every 2 weeks and no problem(2 years old) Think the medication method might be better as Corys dont take well to salt in the water.

maybe get a biowheel. I don't have to worry about starting over when I change the filter this way and haven't had a problem on my 6 year old 55 gallon tank. knock wood.
I always liked maracyn becasue it didnt' color the water and you didn't have to remove carbon. not sure what the active ingredient is in there..

Hi Kelly, I think if you look at your second post on this thread you will find that you have answered your own question. Take a look at your maintenance on the 30 gallon where you are having problems, and then look at how you are maintaining your 5 gallon tank in which you aren't having any problems.
