I'm having problems with one of my tanks nitrite level. It is a 40 gallon ex high (36" x 13" x 19")all I have in it is 1 black P. My filters are an UGF powered with 2 power head 301's, and a Aqua Tech 20-40. I never have a problem with the ammonia level just the nitrite. I've tried water changes and I've used AmQuel plus. After doing this it will drop to 0 ppm and stay there for a few days but 5-10 days later it spikes back up, sometimes as high as 10 ppm. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do to correct this problem or what could be causing it. IP: Logged |

How long have you had the UGF set up and going?? Sometimes they get to much bio underneith which will cause the filter to produce toxins. I did away with my UGF completly and gt a Bio wheel. No probs since. 3 yrs ago. IP: Logged |

There is too much debris under the UGF. If you have an outside power filter, remove one of the power heads and place the outside filters input hose down the riser tube of the UGF. If this doesn't pull the debris out remove the other power head and place the output hose of the outside power filter down this riser tube. The second process may cause the debris to come up through the gravel into the tank. The only other way is to break down the tank and clean it. If you have to break the tank down be sure to keep a small amount of the debris to seed the tank once you set it back up. Hope this helps. IP: Logged |

Do not disconnect the UGF without removing the bottom plastic peice. It will create a bed of toxins. Keep 3/4 of the water, remove fish. Then clean out tank and strain gravel with warm water and a brush only. Replace gravel, pour saved water back in without stirring up gravel to much. Add fish fill remaining water to top. Use stress coat or prime or other balancer, ammonia remover. Continue witha 25% change within 2 days and then weekly vacume as normal. Good Luck IP: Logged |
