2 MONTH old 10 gal fresh h20 tank with 7 tetras-all was well with chemistry but started getting lots of brown algea. Bought 2 small algea eaters and now ammonia is high 1.0 ppm. Fish are ill,1 died. I did 25% h20 change last night but levels are the same or possibly even higher. Help! Keith IP: Logged |

How long did you let your tank cycle before getting fish into it? If you didn't allow it to cycle for at least two weeks then it's no wonder. Keep changing 20% of the water every 24 hours until the ammonia has dropped. Also, when you change the water are you syphoning the bottom of the aquarium to remove feces? What kind of filter do you have and when did you last change it? How large are the tetras, and what kind of algae eaters did you get..please don't tell me you bought some plecos, because if so they'll need a much larger aquarium pretty soon. Hi ripper, with the tank being 2 months old it should have already finished it's cycle. From the sounds of it, when you are doing your water changes you are taking the water from the top of the tank. You need to siphon the water from the bottom of the tank to remove waste. Removing the water from the top your ammonia levels will only drop for a few hours and then climb back up. IP: Logged |
