I have 5 fish, in my community tropical freshwater tank, and when I bought them I was told they were comet tetras. After looking up the web, I can not identify these fish.

They are quite large, about 7 cms (for tetras !), very fast, they chase each other around the tank at halirous speeds, are silver/grey with black broken stripes. The stripes are vertical, and about 5- 6 broken stripes.

They do not bother any of the other fish, which are a big mixture of guppies, tetras and catfish.

But I have no idea what these guys are, please help.

They are not fat fish, and are shaped like a flat diamond, with a v shaped tail.

If you would like me to email u a picture no probs.

Thanks in advance.

Best regards

David Weir

I would like a pic. I know some of the larger tetras can get 3-4 inches some say the red eye can get 4-5 inches but I've never seen one that big.

I suggest that you take one to a petstore and get them to help you identify it.

Well, they look a lot like danios. Minnow family, I think. but the stripes are weird to be giant danios. Rainbows are also in the family and have the same type look and behavior. maybe your fish is some kind of danio hybrid, or are rainbows. there are tons of species of rainbows out there, but at first look your picture reminds me of giant danios. good luck!

Thank you !

yes, I think they are giant danios, and the explaination of them seems precise, as they are extremely fast swimmers !
