I have a tank that I am taking care of for a friend who massively overfead and just plain took bad care of this tank. Its a 40 gallon with goldfish so its extra messy. I was able to get the PH neutral quickly without disturbing the fish, however I havent had great success getting the ammonia and nitrate levels down as quickly as I would like. I have done 50% a water change with Bio-safe and Bio-coat and introduce freshwater aquiarium salt into the aquarium. Tank has been scrubbed clean of algea and 2 power filters rated at 30 gallons each or going to town, one of them which i placed a Nitra-zorb bag in. The Nitrate levels are around 160PPM and the Ammonia levels I was able to get down from 16PPm to about 7PPm from 16 but the rate of decrease has leveled off. I am worried about these poor fish, I am suprised they are still alive based on there levels. Does anyone have any additional suggestions that I havent tried yet?

Use an outside power filter like Diatom to remove excess waste and food from the gravel. Gently stir up the gravel while the filter is running. If the tank has an under-gravel filter you can remove the power-head or airstone from the riser tube and place the input tube to your external filter down the riser tube to remove debris from underneath the UG filter. You can do water changes all day long but you will only affect ammonia and nitrite levels slightly until you get the debris out.

Try cleaning the gravel with a vaccuum/siphon hose.
