O.K. guys, I'm about to give up on fish! I've had two bala sharks and sucker fish die on me and now my four african chiclids have black spots on them. One of them has white film-like stuff on it's fin. Can anyone tell me what these balck spots and film are and what I can to about it? PLEASE HELP!

are they fighting that you've noticed? mine will sometimes get a black spot on them, but it's from fighting. same with the fins. are they eating? seem ok otherwise?
do you have lots of "caves" and other things to mark territories?
when in doubt, do a water change. add a little salt. I do a tbsp per 5 gallons.

The one with the white film seems to be eating less than the others are. The others seem to pick at this one more too. There are "caves"; we have a little house but my yellow one seems to have claimed that for itself. They don't really fight but they chase each other around and play a lot and now they all seem less energetic than usual.

How old is your tank and how big is it?
do you only have the 4 fish in it? do you know what kind of cichlids they are? also, male to female ratio? they also like a limestone rock in their tank which you can get a locally run fish store (probably not petsmart or petco). it sounds like you need to do a water change and get a few more hiding places, some fake plants. you should change the water weekly. about 20% or even more. I change mine 2x a week sometimes. cichlids reallllly like a lot of water changes.
also, it sounds like you might have mbuna cichlids. they do best on spirulina flakes.

Well I have 3 now! The one that had the white film on it died! This is my first tank and I've only had it for about a month and so far our fish aren't doing too well. I don't really know a lot about these fish and the petstore I got them from hasn't been too helpful either. All I know is that 2 of my african chiclids are blue w/ kind of tiger or zebra like stripes and one of them is yellow with horizontal black and white stripes at the top. I have no idea which are males or females. My tank is 29 gallons. I don't know if there is anything I can do now because I fear it may be too late for the other 3!

Do like a 30 percent water change add salt, treat the water, keep them fed thats about all i can think of.

well since your tank is new it is probably cycling still. did it ever get cloudy? when you start up a new tank, you need to do a lot of water changes. people often buy fish they consider "disposable" in the beginning because sometimes the fish die. are you treating the water with detoxifier when you change the water?
you could ask a petstore for a scoop of old gravel from one of their tanks. it might help the cycling process along. since you've had it running a month, it might be in good shape pretty soon.
can't emphasize changing water enough.
cichlids are not really a good beginner fish. Gouramis are nice hardy fish (not the dwarf kind!!) have great personalities, use all levels of the tank (29 gal would be nice for gouramis) and are fairly peaceful. I would suggest pearl gouramis, opaline, moonlight, and blue gouramis. gold gourami males can be a little too bossy.
some plants would also go a long way in helping out your tank. I like the sword plants. hardy, full leaves that the fish love.
good luck to you
