Will gold severums reach their full size potential in a 30 gallon and need to be moved to a larger tank as they grow? Or are they like goldfish and only grow as large as their tank will allow them to? IP: Logged |

A 30 gallon is about as small as you'd want to get for an adult as they can reach a foot in length. Will you have just the one fish? Goldfish do not, in fact, grow to the size of their tank - although it's a common thing to hear in a pet store by the people selling them. They may become stressed by cramped quarters and become stunted, but this is not a natural adaptation and usually results in a shortened lifespan for the fish. The "goldfish bowl" should be considered a misnomer. IP: Logged |

I have two severums. They are both very young, about an inch in length each. How long do I have until I need to upgrade to a larger tank? Thanks! IP: Logged |

I would imagine they'll be OK for now, provided there are a few caves, plants etc. available for them to stake out territory. Some of what I've read says they require a tank at least 40" long and 20" high (for swimming space). As far as when to upgrade, keep an eye out for aggresion, as this could be a sign that they are feeling crowded. Check out www.liveaquaria.com and similar sites for water temp/PH/hardness info. I have three four-month old Gold Severums in a 30-gallon tank. This afternoon I'm moving them to a 75-gallon tank. Two of them are the size of a quarter and the other is a little smaller. I'm glad I'm moving them because they are starting to fight with each other. This fighting stage has only started in the past couple of weeks, so I will breath a sigh of relief when they get to their new home. It is more than obvious that the largest of the three loves the bottom and the plants and the next largest would like to be therer to, but his been ran off to the middle of the tank in the tops of the plants. Lately they have chased the smallest of the three off to the top of the tank - and I don't think he likes it up there very much. So when they are moved, I've proved a large piece of driftwood and several rocks for them to find their own little area to get out of the way of the other. I hope this kind of provides you with somewhat of a timeline. IP: Logged |
