does anyone know how much light I should be using in my 30 gallon tank for live plants. And also, what should I feed the plants, that won't hurt the fish or the biological filtration? And one more Q - Should I or shouldn't I invest in a CO2 machine, or are they just a waste of money? Any help on the keeping and care of live plants with my fish would be very much appreciated!! Your LFS should have a wide variety of plant food that is safe. Your lighting hours shouldn't change I go with about 8 hours a day give or take a little. If you wanted to get fancy and your bank account allows it you could spring for a marine light setup. White mixed with actinic blue NO(normal output) don't get talked into HO(high output) you only need that for marine tanks. ------------------ [This message has been edited by gr8fuljames (edited 09-28-2003).] IP: Logged |

Plants are similar to fish in that they all have different requirements depending on species. The amount of light needed will depend on the needs of the plant (high, medium, low) and the size of you tank. Also, flourescent lights utilizing a wider spectrum are considered better than incandescent bulbs. I, however, have a planted tank using incandescent bulbs - but it receives a lot of sunshine, so think about where the tank is to be placed. As far as a CO2 producer, plants use light and CO2 for photosynthesis during the day and respirate oxygen at night. There are "chemical" sources of carbon sold, although I'm not sure how effective they are. The cheaper CO2 producers, using sugar and yeast, can even be made at home. If you use web designs make sure it has a check valve - even if the design doesn't call for it. For food, plants utilise fish wastes for nitrogen so you only really need to add a bit of "aquarium fertilizer" every once in a while (basically iron and a few trace minerals).
