Hi Everyone ... newbie here
Here is a Betta question for anyone & some other general questions ...

I would like to purchase a female betta for my community tank. I have a swordtail, 3 neons and 4 danios. I have a question on the Betta. I think that they live in rice patties? So, being that they are not use to high currents, if I put this fish in my tank with a high current (280 GPH) would that stress her out? Also, would she have problems getting to the top of the tank to get air and not get stressed out about that?
For equipment I have a Marineland Emperor 280 power filter on the back of my 30 gallon hexagon tank. It has an adjustable flow rate for when you want to feed them, but if I am reading the manual correctly, it says to leave it in the "up" position, which is full throttle! If I put in in the middle it slows the flow down alot, will this do anything to the cycling of my tank? Should I leave it always in the up position, or not worry about it if I turned it down a knotch for the betta? Will this do anything to the proper function of this unit?

Question #2:
I eventually would like to put a couple of Angels in this tank. Now that I have solved whether or not to put Angels with swords, what do you think about Angels with a female Betta?

Question #3:
Will the high current issue really be an issue at all with the Angels, the betta or the swordtail? My husband thinks that the swordtail and the betta will get stressed out because of the high current. Sorry about all the questions, gosh I am such a newbie!!! LOL

Thanks in advance for your patience with me and my questions! -Heidi

another name for a betta is a siamese fighting fish, they are not a good choice for a community tank, i think it will kill the other fish, bettas are most happy by them selfs.
I always leave my filters on full flow i never adjust it even when feeding, they recomend you turn the flow down so it does not suck up the food before the fish can eat.

I have never heard of water current stressing out fish, i could be wrong.

as for the second question again i dont think the betta would get along with the angels either.

I have a betta alone in a 2 gallon. i have seen them in mason jars with live plants growing out the top of the jar and the betta swimming around in the roots. they dont need alot of room.

This site http://www.aquariumfish.net/catalog_pages/bettas/bettas_males_more.htm#top2
Claims that ghost shrimp, white clouds, platies, mollies, swordtails, angelfish, danois, gouramis, bala sharks, clown loaches, corys, and plecos could all coexist together with a male betta in a tank.

I think that the name fighting fish comes from the males fighting to the death when put together in a bowl. As for other fish I don't think they show that much aggresion to deserve the name but this is only what I've read. I keep my betta alone in a 10 gal.

only male bettas fight, and that is with eachother, they wont attack other fish. also, i would strongly advise u not 2 add angelfish into that tank. i had a tnak jsut like yours, and the angels i had ate all the other fish or killed them, including the bettas. angels are better off in a species tank

She is Blue-Violet colored, very pretty. But, it looks like she is sick now. The swordtail that I got was chasing her around alot and nipping at her! So, I had to take her out. I hope she survives! She has been through a very traumatic experience ...

When you say put them in a 'species tank' what do you mean by that? And, I saw my swordtail chasing this poor female betta around the tank and nipping at her tail, until she is so stressed that I had to take her out. I do not know if she will survive. She has a good size chunk taken out of her tail ... poor thing!
