I posted about this earlier but without replies...so here goes...I'm considerring spending the time and money to get a large but not necessarily giant tank setup...wonderring if you can build your own using acrylic or plexiglass sheets and silicone...anyway before I spend all that money on setup of a tank and then buying the books for each fish and ultimately buying the fish I was wonderring about these things marketed to computer owners and available for sale at any office Depot...they're called power ups and work like a cross between a really powerfull long lived battery and emergency back up generator...I was thinking they'd work for the heater...filter and air stone in a tank to keep the fish from keeling over dead from a sudden change in water temp or not enough air etc...when you get a prolonged blackout or electrical storm...has anyone else tried these things? They're kind of expensive but not really expensive if you consider the time, care, and money spent on your fish...I haven't tried it because I don't have any fish requiring a heater...but I have had fish before that died because of temp fluctuations due to power outages...I'm thinking certain fish are more sensetive to dirty water than others so that's why I mentioned the filter...and I mentioned the air because of a post someone put up about their air tank getting knocked over by a mischievous ferret...I doubt if it would help in ferret related fish deaths(fishslaughter?) but power outage related???...I think it would work...sometimes really terrible things happen...(here in San Francisco whenever there's a really big earthquake we spend a really long time without electricity) and that's not counting the recent energy crisis...or the night the lights went out in New York City not long ago...I mean if one of these Power Ups devices can keep a computer setup going for hours imagine what it could do for your fish...or what if you have kids???...you could get one for the kitchen so you could at least use a hot-plate...microwave...and toaster oven to keep them fed...you could use one for lamps for the readers in your family...how about one for someone who wants to watch a vhs or dvd to get their mind off of things and doesn't have a portable? Perfect if you're afraid of the dark...plus if you have a bathtub you could boil enough water for a shallow bath so you don't have to go to work or school stinky...the possibilities are almost endless...

I'd appreciate feedback since I'm totally giving this a great deal of consideration.

You can build your own tanks using plexiglass or glass. Depending on the size you probably want to consult a local glass company to determine the proper thickness and any additional support you may have to add, and the advantages of one material over another. For example plexiglass is less likely to break but will scratch much easier than glass. Several glass companies have people working for them that build custom tanks as a sideline. Regarding power-ups: I don't use a power-up on my computer. Computers have come a long way since the early days. Basically now if you have a power failure the only information you will lose is whatever program you were in the process of working on when the power failure occured. Considering all the appliances you are thinking about operating with power-ups the cost would be too prohibitive. None of the appliances you mention are as power efficient as your computer. Your best options are 1) Just try to maintain airflow to your aquarium and forget the rest. For that Petsmart has a battery operated pump for about $15.00. Or 2) If you want to maintain all your appliances your best recourse is probably solar panels connected to an array of deep cycle Marine batteries or heavy equipement batteries with a relay switch to automatically switch the power over when you have an outage. The reason for using deep cycle Marine or heavy equipment batteries is that they can carry heavier loads with less current drain than a standard 12v car battery. Also they will last longer by the constant charging from the solar cells than a car battery. Or 3) You can get a portable generator to handle just the necessaties when the power goes out. Hopefully this has answered your question.
