I have had my Beta for a few months now its a female and she has always been very pale in color just recently her color brightened up and she looked great but then half her body turned a whitish color like she lost all color from her nose to her belly but her tail is still bright and she sinks to the bottom of the tank like she doesnt have enough energy to get up to the top anymore. she also swims around kind of sideways like theres something wrong on her side, thats when she does move. The rest of the time she "sits" She will sit at the bottom with her tail in the rocks and sits straight up, like shes staring at the top I have never seen a fish do that before. I just noticed today that her scales are kinda sticking out. I have no idea what is wrong with her but dont want her to suffer. Help!

Hi, Don't give up hope. But my female Betta died yesterday with the same thing. I'm on the hunt to find out what it was so I can tackle the problem if it happens again.

Mine was a female too, though I am not convinced it would not happen to the males. She was okay and then started to slow down eating (over few days) then found her sunk to bottom.. barely moving and racing to surface only to get air and then sunk down again.

Over two days I noticed colour vanish and scales appear to open out (like flaps in airplane) and she started to fall over (loose balance and flotation).

Her breathing slowed dramatically and even appeared to stop when sleeping. She died soon after (within 12 hours of this).

I thought because she had a slightly bloated looking stomach she might have digestive problem so I put her in a smaller container and added aquarium salts... this worked for my male when he lost his flotation. BUT I don't know if I was to slow to act or whether it was something else.

Fingers crossed, try the aquarium salt it helps with bloating and gives the fish back the minerals it needs for healthy gill function...

Let me know if you find an answer.

Beta fish can be lazy but the other symptoms you describe makes me think something is wrong.
c823 Try to go on a fish disease site and see what you think. If your not sure maybe you could take it in to your lfs. Someone there could probably help you out.
kat_caged your problem that you had sounds like your fish died of dropsy. When fish have it they get whats refered to as the pine cone effect, bloated and fins sticking out. This usually occurs because of a fungus or over medicating the tank.
c823 There is a recent post here about helpful diagnotic sites. Check that out.

dropsy is mainly found in goldfish. if your betta didnt die from a parasite (which is most likely the case) it could have been pregnant. when female bettas get pregnant if their male mate isnt in there with them to push the eggs out, they will just sit on the bottom, get fat, and die. if you get another betta and this starts to happen, put in some fresh water salt (helps the healing process) and you may want to try a medication called bettamax, it is supposed to cure all betta diseases. good luck.

vb9sk8er dropsy may be more common in goldfish but thats because goldfish are nasty little buggers and most people keep them in a bowl which contributes to poor water conditions. Poor water conditions can lead to fungal infections which is a leading cause of dropsy the other is overmedicating. One or the other effects the kedney. This being the case I'm sure any fish is subject to dropsy under the right conditions. With the description of the scales sticking out that's what led me to believe this might have been the problem.
