Hi everyone, I just been to the pet shop, to look at the new fish, and they have some apple snails, they are really cute, small little yellow snails. I was gonna get one there and then, but its better to get a bit of info before, I'm gonna do a search, but does any of you ever had some of these? Another thing is that I never had a snail in my aquarium, so I don't know a thing about them. IP: Logged |

Apple Snails can get rather large. I put a couple in my pond. It wasn't long before the pond was over run with Apple Snails. They lay their eggs on the plant stalks just above the water. In an aquarium they would probably lay eggs on the glass if the water were kept about an inch low, but beware they do multiply quickly (faster than rabbits), and do get large. IP: Logged |

a warning: just getting one doesnt guarantee that it wont multiply. most snails can store sperm and the one you purchase may already be fertilized. IP: Logged |

Clarification on Apple Snail reproduction. Apple Snails are hermaphroditic, which means they have both male and female reproductive organs. Even though they have both sets of organs they do not self fertilize. There must be two to spawn. What is interesting about this is that while the sperm of one is fertilizing the egg of the other, the others sperm can be fertilizing the egg of the one. Kind of twice the bang for the buck so to speak. In buying two Apple Snails you don't get one mated pair, you get two mated pairs.
