Last night i got up to get a drinkand looked in the tank as i went by and to my horror all my fish were on the bottomand not moving, the pacus the oscar even the pleco was not moving. i thought they were all dead so i reached into the tank to check if they were dead i could push the pacus around and they wouldnt react they were alive but wouldnt respond (anyone who has now or ever had pacus knows they are easily spooked!!) and they looked like they were turning black. So i imediately removed the carbon filters and add the recomended amount of "Quick Cure" this morning i checked on them (as usual) and they are back to there old selves the pacus are active and eating and the oscar is begging at the top as he always does when i enter the room. it seemed like my pacus used to "play" dead whenever the texas cichlids were breeding so that they wouldn't get attacked, and they did turn a dark, maybe they're getting picked on by something else in the tank? IP: Logged |

This is only a guess pacuguy but the rapidity that the tank went sour, I would check to see if there is some uneaten food around the base of your rocks or plants in the tank. I lost a tank of RBP's from that. I was in a rush to get to work one morning and just dropped in a little beef heart. They didn't eat all of it and it had soured the water and killed all 6 of them by 9pm that night. PS - I hope your fish are still doing OK. i did a 25% water change, vacuumed the gravel the tank water is now a brown yellow colour. i think your right to much waste. the pacus are still black from about mid body down!!!!! why is this? they rule the tank, theres only the 2 pacus one oscar and one pleco in the tank i noticed the pleco has been getting very aggresive. maybe this is the pacu problem? anyone have an aggresive pleco? The lower body being black with charcoal upper body is really a normal coloration not necessarily associated with stress. I've seen them go from solid charcoal to half and half and back to solid in a 24 hour period with no change in tank conditions. It was the other symptoms that had me concerned. Regarding agressive pleco. I tried adding a Pacu to my Arowana's tank. The Plecostamus I had in there would continually move into the Pacu's way and nudge him. He wasn't really being agressive just a general pain in the posterior for the Pacu! I ended up returning the Pacu because he nipped the tail of my Arowana. The Arow's tail grew back and he's fine. I've read that plecos will suck on other fishes slime sometimes. especially larger fish and discus. generally it's the 3-4 inch pleco that does this. I was surprised because I'd never heard of such a thing till I read about it! also, that larger plecos can get aggressive. glad your fish are ok! IP: Logged |

I just run hanging and UG filters. After spending about 3 hours with a wet/dry vac at 2:00 in the morning because a Magnum got out of balance and wore a hole in the canister I quit using canister type. After hearing all the rave reviews on this website about the Fluval I decided to check on them. I spoke to one of the people at Petsmart. They told me they were great filters except after several filter changes there was a plastic piece on them that broke. It's been a while since I spoke to them but the best I can remember is that it was the catch. In any case what it amounted to was that the whole filter would have to be replaced to correct the problem. The only canister type filter that I use is a Diatom filter once a week and it doesn't run all the time, just a gravel stir and filter. Like I've said a lot of my methods are old fashioned but they still seem to work. In any case I would leave the filters you have on there in place. IP: Logged |

I've had a Chinese algae eater suggested to me by a co-worker who's kept fish for along time. But, when I researched them I read that when they reach adult size they feed off of the slime coat of other fish (a nightmare). I have a Pleco now and he's an extremely timid guy (even at 7 inches long and 8 years old). I even had a Betta in a big bowl next to the aquarium at one time and the Betta would actually flare at him (this was a very aggressive Betta, btw) and the pleco quickly swam off to the opposite of the tank even those this Betta wasn't any bigger then the plecos mouth. That aggression does seem really odd. [This message has been edited by Stacie (edited 08-05-2003).] IP: Logged |
