If anyone reading this is a begginer I would just stick to the store bought and follow directions closely
Ok kc5gvn heres what I have for the Melafix recipe. You take one once of 100% tea tree oil (melaleuca tea tree) and mix it with one gal. of sterile water (just boilt water for five min.) that's all there is to it. The sterile water is just for the shelf life, also keeping it cool or refrigerated helps too. This is a bit milder than the store bought but the same dose will work as the store bought is fairly strong. If you want to sit and do the math to get it closer the box says contains 1 percent melaleuca, you could probably use like half an once to pints or quarts and get the percentage just right but I don't think it is that critical. The smell you may of heard of smells kinda like vicks vapor rub.
dosage as a disease or wound treatment: add one tsp. (5ml) for every ten gal. (40 L) doing a 25% water change before you add for seven days. ( the bottle says treatment may be continued if necissary but I dont dose my fish that long with anything without a short break to clear up the water)
dosage when adding new fish for bacterial maint. add one tsp. (5ml) for every 10 gal. (40L) 25%water change for three days. Always remove your activated carbon if possible.
As with any meds you have to be carful always do a water change before each time you dose the tank so it does not build up in the water and overdose your tank/fish.
If anyone reading this is a begginer I would just stick to the store bought and follow directions closely.
If you want to know where I got this recipe It was on another message board and I think several people there make the homemade melafix. http://www.angelfish.net/yabbse/index.php?board=5;action=display;threadid=471;start=0
Not sure if this link will work I pasted it here.

Thank you for the recipe. I enjoy trying things like that. I'm kind of an experimenter by nature. I didn't mean to sound like a horses behind in my other post about natural ingredients, but people have the tendancy of thinking "just because it's natural it's safe" or "if a little is good a lot is great". I've got a friend that reads the warning label on medications: "Use of this medication may cause drowsiness, disorientation, loss of coordination. Use of alcohol with this medication may increase this effect." and he says, "Sounds like a suggestion to me". That's why I made that statement.

Yea I understand exactly where your coming from. I know people who are the same way. I was kinda leary of posting the recipe for that reason I hope nobody makes it and hurts there fish. You shouldn't have a problem though.
