My daughter's beta was colored a beautiful red and blue. Recently the color started becoming dull and the beautiful fins are looking kind of droopy and look like they are sticking together. We have not changed his food and change the water twice a week with water filtered from our fridge and brought up to room temperature. Does anyone know what we should do?

we might need some more info here. Is this new or have you had the fish for awhile? you said that you use filtered water. Do you add water conditioner? If this is city water is contains chlorine. What do you keep it in maybe the tank or bowl is dirty causing poor water parameters. Is there any signs of parasites?

Thanks for replying. We are new at this. The Beta is about 5 weeks old. He is kept in a 1 1/5 gallon fish bowl. We have no live plants in the bowl. We do not use conditioner, the pet shop said it was not necessary as long as we used filtered water out of the fridge and let it stand 5-6 hours to reach room temperature. We don't see any evidence of parasites. The only reason we think he is sick is his plummage is not as free flowing and looks stuck together at the ends. We give him 2 pellets of food morning and night. He eats happily.

Not sure what type of filter you have but I dont know of any that filter out chlorine if you have city water this could be adding stress to the fish and you need to buy some water conditioner that removes chlorine and chlorimides its cheap and easy to use. Also I dont know when you say "change the water" do you mean all of it. Massive water changes that often will not support bio system and your tank/bowl will constantly have nts (new tank syndrom). That is where basically your fish is being poisoned with amonia. If this is the case I would stay on top of the water changes every three days or find a way to support a bio system in a bowl (It can be done)

As gr8fujames stated, "refrigerator filters do not filter out chlorine". They are designed to filter out minerals (in particular lead). Since that is the only fish in 1.5 gallons, your ammonia shouldn't get above 1ppm in a week. My best suggestion would be to get a 5 gallon bucket with a lid. The lid is to keep dust and contaminates out and to help keep the water fresh. Fill the bucket with 5 gallons of water. Add 1 ml of Amquel to remove chlorine/chloramines, and 1 ml of Novaqua to buffer the PH. This will give you enough water for 3 weekly water changes plus a little extra that you can add in between changes to compensate for evaporation. From the descriptions it sounds like your Betta is suffering from clamped fin and possibly chlorine poisoning.
