I've had fish for 32 years. Right now in my tanks I have: Redtail Cat, SA silver Arowana, Tiger Shovelnose, Bala Shark, Clown Knife, Anostamus Pleco, Botia Lohachata, Clown Loach, Swirl Pleco, Pangasius Cat, Firemouth Cichlid, Jewel Cichlid, Jack Dempsy, Perruno Cat, Lima Cat, Tinfoil Barb, Silver Dollar, various Tetras. I've always been partial to the gracefulness of the Arowana, but my favorite of all time was a Black Pacu that I had for 6 years until we had an ice storm here and was without power for 5 days. A really sad day when I lost him.

With regards to fin growth, Usually they will grow back without any problem. The only time I've seen that they didn't was when the hard ray of the fin was bitten off next to the body. Even when they were bitten off that close most of the time they still grow back. I believe Stress-zyme is supposed to help with fin regrowth. Check the bottle to make sure.
With regards to Black Pacus. I have had blacks and reds, and as much as I love the reds, for me they don't hold a candle to the blacks. The blacks are more docile and make a wonderful pet. Blacks are extremely hard to find now. The reds proliferate so well they have just about run the blacks out. It's a shame. I wish I had enough land to put in a small lake just to breed Black Pacus.

Pacuguy,
If you want to speed up the recovery use "MelaFix" Its an antibacterial remedy that also repairs fins and heals wounds, the stuff works great. Its all natural but with any meds read label good you can overdose the tank.MelaFix is available at just about any LFS for around five dollars. There is a way to make your own from pure tea tree oil but unless your a breeder or just have alot of tanks its easier to buy it.

gr8fuljames, If you have a recipe for a home brew Melafix please post it. I'm interested in that kind of stuff. Please don't take this as a criticism of Melafix because I've never used it and for that reason I can't criticize it. Just because a product is all natural ingredients don't assume it to be safe. They're are a lot of natural ingredients that can be hazardous.

In the past I've had melafix recommended to me by the fish store I use. I don't know if it works because I didn't use it more than once because the smell was so overwhelming and awful. I think it's probably pretty safe, but Gads the smell! not a big fan of teatree oil I guess! LOL
just my 2cents ; )

kc5gvn,
Thanks for the extra warning and caution. Yes even though it is natural tea tree oil is very strong and if you don't follow the directions and use proper dose it can and will harm your fish, may even kill them. What alot of people don't know is this is true with everything. I new someone that overdosed there stressed fish with stress coat. It turned the water froathy and killed his fish. As for the recipe I can post it under a seperate topic.
