Your fishes waste and uneaten food particles will collect around your rocks and plants due to the water current much the same way trash along the side of the road will collect against fences due to the wind. You might find this repost helpful.
Repost:
For what it's worth. Besides my normal routine maintainence every 6 months I remove
all of the plants and rocks and clean them. While they are out of the tank I stir up the
gravel and run an outside diatom filter. I repeat this step several times until the water is clear when I stir up the gravel. I then do a 50% water change and use Novaqua to
buffer the PH and remove chlorine/chloramine. I also follow this procedure whenever I am having a bacterial problem. I NEVER change 100% of the water unless I am having a bacterial problem that can't be controlled any other way. Remember when you change 100% of the water your tank will recycle, more than likely causing the loss of some fish. By the way I'm no expert either.

about novaqua... on the bottle it says it does not remove chloramine, just chlorine. to use amquel for chloramine and ammonia.

dianenm, you are correct it does say that on the Novaqua bottle. After using it for 32 years I guess I just don't read the label anymore when I buy it. I should have included the fact, for clarity, that I also dose the tank with Amquel when doing water changes, but the main points of my text were rapid PH changes and tank recycling. I apologise for taking people only half way into the water, so to speak.

I don’t think that you should worry because the filters should do their job and clean up the water. If they don’t I think that you should change the water again.

Thanks for clearing that up kc5gvn. I always read all your posts closely, take your advice and appreciate the input you give here! Oh, about rocks.. I asked the fish store I use (aquatek) about limestone in with african cichlids, and they said definitely, even with our natuarally hard water. so I ran home and plundered the yard. LOL

Dianenm, thank you for your comments. So many times I put up a post and it seems like the thread dies at that point. I don't know if they used my advice or how it worked for them. I know a lot of my methods are old fashioned, but they've worked well for me. I think the main thing I would like to get across is to just do the weekly maintenance and avoid a chemical tank. You have fewer problems and time to actually enjoy your fish. Besides PH, water hardness, Ammonia, Nitrates, and Nitrites there are thousands of trace elements in your fishes natural waters which you can never duplicate exactly. An aquarium, at best, is only an approximation of their natural water no matter how exacting you get. In regards to rocks, in nature the lakes and streams these fish come from aren't glass lined. The deeper the lake the more varied the type of rock you will find lining it. If it's deep enough you will probably find everything from granite to sandstone to limestone to shale. The main thing is to make sure that what you put into your tank is clean of any residue or organic matter. Again, thank you for your comments but I'm still not an expert and if there is anything I say that you think is questionable don't hesitate to ask or check out with someone you feel is reputable.

I too read your posts and listen to them when I run across the problem that it regards and I would like to say in your defence that EVERY BIT of the advice you have given me as well as others that I have had to try has worked and worked very well. There are just a few people in here that I listen to and follow what they say and you are one of them. I have even copied and pasted your comments into emails and sent them to 3 freinds of mine that has fish and they all 3 agree that you must know when it comes to fish. So with that concludeing this post I will sign off untill next time by saying if you do like the fact that I send your comments to my friends please let me know and I will stop.

I speak for lots of members here when I say
Thanks for all the help.

Griffon

Hi
Just thought I would share my maint. routine
I try to vacuum out the rocks every 4-6 weeks changing about 20 to 30 percent of the water depending on how dirty the rocks are. I do this on all seven of my tanks and it keeps the water parameters good. The more water you chage the more you effect the biological system of your tank.

griffon i might be wrong but i believe that i have mentioned the language thing before.it's not allowed here.i'm not trying to be rude by editing out the language it's just my job to do it.there are children that come to auspet and they would rather not have them see that language.

Griffon, dianenm et all,
Thank you for your posts. A lot of the time I don't know if my posts have helped someone and it's nice to know that they have helped. That is my intent in posting them. Maybe one of these days i'll post some of the funny things that happened while working in pet shops or just some general maintenance guidelines and recipes. In any case I'm glad to know that I have helped someone and continue to have fun here at Auspet.
