I have two large oscars. I just finished treating one for hole in the head. The other one has large white nasty patches on him - almost looks like his skin is peeling off. I have had the two over 6 years. They are in a 75 gallon tank.I cannot find a vet who treats fish, and cannot find anything that matches it in the disease section. Does anyone know what it might possibly be? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like you got some sick oscars on you hands.
Afriend of mine lost three oscars before being told by a pet shop owner that live feeding oscars is the worst thing somone can do. Every sick oscar he sees is from the feeder fish.
He recomended HBH's super cichlid sinkers and AZoo's 9 in 1 Arowana sticks.
he has had his oscar now 5 years and not a problem healthy as a sea horse.
this doesnt help you but i just wanted to comment

i believe it is ich a form of parasite that comes from fast temperature change in the water becasue i had the same thing on my 3 year old knife that died from no medication. is the white marks starting to grow all over the oscar or in one spot.
if its in one spot then im not sure what it is and if it all over ur oscar will scracth him self on the bottom or on a rock to stop the iching.the fishes iching will make it worse ans he will bleed. u can get ich medication at any pet store jus ask for where it is and get home and put it in there replie back ------catfish rule-----

I am new to oscars... The holes in the oscars head, did they spread to multiple spots? If so, how did you treat them?

it can spread. to treat it you need to go to the pet shop and buy the tablets to put into your tank.it tells you on the back how much to use per how many gallons in your tank.

I went to an oriental pet shop and they gave me antibiotics for the hole in the head. It's still there. Now they both have fungus on them and one has popeye. His eye is bulging out awful. Today the pet store gave me tetracycline. These guys are going to break me! I've already used a whole bottle of ick medicine. Still trying to keep them going. Thanks for your responses. Any other thoughts?

How long has it been since you've changed your filter? also, have you done a fairly sizable water change after using all that medication and having those ongoing problems? I was having those type issues once when the filter had gotten really nasty and I thought my husband had taken care of it. everything got better immediately after.. I spent tons on medication also.

I change the filter at least once a month. I've done numerous water changes in the past two months. What I read was that the problem was probably due to undergravel filters. I also removed those and the water was awful!!! The tank turned almost brown. That was when I really started doing water changes. It is now real clear, the gravel is very light, the undergravel filters are gone and I've bought a bio wheel filter. Still problems.

Good luck with Tiger Woods. My Oscars will bite and draw blood if you stick your hand in to fix plants. One of mine also ate a little catfish. It got stuck in his mouth for 2 days. They also get BIG!!!
