I recently got a vieled double tail male betta and "Suspense" is really startig to worry me. He's in a smaller tank and just doesn't seem able to swim straight or get down to the bottom. I put a plant in for him to rest on thinking that he would be able to rest under the leaves instead of over like my regular bettas, but I've only seen him that low once and since he's new I'm constantly watching him. He seeems to have problems turning in the water and when he rests just kind of lists over to one side or the other. He doesn't seem to want to be doing that because he'll start fighting t get upright again. My best friend works at the fish department in a pet store and tells me that it's just because his tails are too heavy for him to swim straight, but I'm just wondering if it's that or if hecuold be sick. If anybody's heard of anything like this, I'd appreciate any input. Thanks!

You've got him in a small tank? Does the tank have a filter? Could that be causing current? Generally bettas like still water. No, its tail isn't too heavy. Also, how many inches of water is the fish in? If its more than 2 or 3 gallons, there's probably too much oxygen at the bottom of the tank. Also, its usually not swim bladder with bettas because of the way they breathe. They have a thing called a 'labyrinth chamber' where they process oxygen from the same air we breath, that's why they're called surface breathers.

He's probably in about a half to two-thirds gallon bowl. I change the water every three days and there's no filter, just plants for him to rest on when he isn't "flipping" around. He also gets Betta Bio Gold pellets in the morning and a little dried shrimp at night if that helps. Thanks for answers!

I highly doubt your feeding him too much, unless its clouding the water and he's getting fat. My bettas eat twice a day, and I spoil them with frozen brine shrimp and bloodworms. You just may have an unexcitable betta. Have you tried putting a mirror to the side of his bowl? If he gets excited and swims fine, he's just being lazy.

I had a betta breeder look at him (finally had a chance) and she thinks it is probably a swim bladder problem or he was just really stressed from the petshop. She says the way he swims it looks like the swim bladder maybe didn't grow as fast as he did, but he should grow out of it when he gets older, and it does seem like he's getting better about swimming around. He's even showing more interest in his food (not that he wasn't eating, just eating faster now instead of leaving the food float for a bit before he went after it) and blowing bubbles. Thanks for all the replies!
