I got a used 55 gallon aquarium about 3 weeks ago and swear this guy never cleaned it. He was selling it because he was moving and (plug your ears) put his fish in the lake! Anyway I cleaned it with vinegar and then rinsed it about a million times. I tested the water and everything was perfect so I put 3 fish in. Oh yeah I did a 50% water change before I put the fish in. Today I opened the lid to feed them and it smelled so bad I almost fell over. I have a brand new Penguin 330 bio wheel that I rinsed very well. What is causing this and is there anything I can do? I did add something that says it rapidly matures new aquariums, the recommended dose of aquarium salt and some easy balance because my PH was a little high. I have a 30 gallon that is about a year old so I think I know what I am doing but have never had this smell before. Nothing is dead in there because I only added 3 fish. This 55 gallon is a dream come true for me so please someone tell me how to get rid of this smell.

Yeah, I know what you can do... never use vinegar again. Any pet store should have a salt solution used for cleaning tanks. Use it and you shouldn't have any problems.

They are the ones who told me to use the vinegar in the first place. It was about $6.00 cheaper then the stuff they had on their shelf. After about 24 hours the smell is gone and my fish are happy as can be, thanks again for your reply!
