Oscars, like other South American cichlids, do best in soft water with a hardness of about 100. The pH is best if slightly acidic (6.0 to 6.5). Optimal temperatures for oscars are between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit. IP: Logged |

If your not going to breed them, then it is better not to screw with the ph. Rising and falling ph will hurt your fish more than the wrong ph will. IP: Logged |

My ph is around 7.0 and they seem to be doig fine. I'm not going to breed them. I just want to enjoy them and watch them grow. I was thinking about lowering the ph some more but I don't want to harm them. Thanks. IP: Logged |

Hooben is absolutely right. People start trying to get the water exactly right for one type fish by adjusting the PH, hardnes etc. You end up with a chemical tank that is unstable and impossible to maintain. Every time you add another chemical you'll find that you have to add something else to correct a change in some other chemical level. Stick with the standard good maintenance and cleaning practices. You'll find that you have healthier fish, a tank that is stable and easy to maintain, and better success with breeding your fish. IP: Logged |
