Well at first oscars will eat cichlid pellets, but later should be fed frozen beefheart and live goldfish feeders. If you buy the oscars small, then make sure and buy some other large fish to go with them like pacu, severum... check your local fish store for somehting big. If they grow up together chances are they will get along.

I don't believe the Bala's would fare too well with Oscars. The only shark I believe is aggressive enough to hang with Oscars is the Black Shark. (opinion)

Really in a small a space as a 55 gallon there is not anything that would live 'well' with them. Oscars are teritorial, and if you really want to keep other fish in with them, I would try nothing less than a 90 gal tank. The bigger the tank, the better the chances that your oscar and any fish that you put in with it will live healthier and happier, and not get into fights and possably kill one another.

Pacus are not a good choice, as they easly get over 24in, and require a huge tank. If the tank is big enough, then almost any fish that is not small enough for the oscar to eat and not more aggresive than the oscar would stand a good chance of everyone getting along.
