Unless you have an outdoor pond it's not very practical. Remember you have to feed the breeder fish to get them large enough to feed to your other fish. You can end up spending more on food for the feeders than the cost of the feeders themselves. An outdoor pond with the proper plants and algae growth will sustain the feeders and get them to appropriate size for feeding.

I have a Koi pond in my backyard and its about this time of year that they breed. Hmmmmmm, baby Koi as feeders? Nope, i love Koi too much to do that. Though it would be very cheap, Koi lay 100,000-200,000 eggs per female. My filters get sooo clogged.

My Koi reached breeding age last spring, so they have only mated once so far. I wasnt properly prepared for them to have eggs and such, so only a few hatched and survived (for awhile, Ill get into that in a minute). They need spawning media such as pete moss etc. to lay thier eggs in. It also offers a hiding place when they hatch. If they dont have a hiding place, the much bigger Koi will minstakenly inhale them, or think that they are bits of food and eat them. Needless to say, I didnt have any spawning media in the pond at the time. Only a few survived to get to the size of about an inch and a half to two inches. Once they wee this size i brought them out of the pond and into a tank inside so i could keep them in a higher temp environment for growth, and to be able to make sure they get amble food (big Koi are hogs!). Anyway, one night the power went out and im not certain why they died (all in one night) but i think they were scared to death, Literally. Between me running around with a flashlight checking on my dogs and other animals, and the filtration unit turning on and off, i think it was too much for them. In the morning they were all dead =( I was pretty bummed for awhile.

oh yeah, it was only 4 Koi that survived to that size. I wasnt ready for them to breed. ALOT of the eggs went into my Filters before i could collect them in spawn media.

I should have much better luck next time. If im properly set up, im sure thousands will hatch as long as they get Germinated.

The Pond is not that big. Its 11'x9' and 4' deep. My Koi a currently 15-18 inches in length. They are my pride and joy. Such gentle, graceful fish. Then i have my Clown Knife and Arowana! Assassins!
