Hey, i dont know anything about your fish, but i read somewhere that piranas grow up healthier and stronger if they have a companion to grow up with. So im guessing it would be the same with other fishes. Obviously some fish are solitary and dont like being with other fish, but u know what i mean.

Bala sharks are schooling fish. They like to have several friends, or more.. however, my biggest bala still does that swimming up and down the glass deal like you mentioned, and he's fine. so if you do get him a couple friends, I'd suggest getting them the same size as your existing bala. also..
balas can get very very big! so keep that in mind with your tank size. have fun!

What he's doing is very common for schooling fish when they're all alone. He sees his reflection in the glass and doesn't realize it's himself and he's following it around attmepting to school. He's likely lonely.

bala sharks need a school of thier own kind of six or more to keep them healhty...the rason they still do the glass thing is that they see thier reflection and think it is more playmate for them to join
