Hello all,
a few days ago, I brought home a Tiger Shovelnose. It is about 2 inches long so it is still quite young. I put it in my isolation 10 gallon tank which is slightly alkaline and 80 degrees temp. Today, I noticed it's Barbs (Whiskers) are starting to curl at the ends and he is sitting with his tail on the bottom and the rest of his body floating at about 45 degrees head up. Whenever I get near the tank he levels off and swims a little bit. What is going on? Any suggestions would be welcome. Also any information on this fish would be helpful...How fast will it out grow the 10 gallon Isolation tank. Thanks Casper...

The angle of the body resting is not uncommon. Althought 80 degrees is not out of range, he would be more comfortable between 76 and 78 degrees. Adjust your thermostat on your heater down gradually: not more than 2 degrees in a 24 hour period. I suspect you haven't added any aquarium salt to the tank (curling barbels). Add 1 tablespoon of aquarium salt or NON-IODIZED ice cream salt per 10 gallons of water. The salt adds needed electrolytes to the water (necessary for catfish) and also helps keep fungus and parasite infestations down.
