right now I have a ten gallon fresh water aquarium. How much would I have to do to it to make it a saltwater? How much maintenance does it require? IP: Logged |

Locally, I've seen some eclipse system 6 and 12 gallon saltwater setups at pet shops. The eclipse features a built in filtration system with bio-wheel in the hood. I don't think a tank this size could support very many saltwater fish though. The ones I've seen only have two fish and they're small damsels. I've also been told that the smaller the tank, the easier it is to foul up the water chemistry. Try to pick up a book on salt water tanks and learn about specific gravity ( amount of salt in water), protein skimmers and live rock with shell substrate from the coral reefs. Salt tanks can be expensive as I learned in making an estimate for a 70 gallon setup. Price for parts and sea salt without fish, tank or stand came to over $900.00. Expect to use only bottled water and frequent changes. Good Luck! [This message has been edited by Hooben (edited 01-25-2003).] IP: Logged |

It's next to impossible to keep a tank balanced less than 30 gallons. A 50 gallon tank is relatively easy and 125 and 150 gallon tanks are a breeze to keep balanced. What is really strange is that once you get over 200 gallons they become increaseingly difficult to balance again the larger you go. Hope this helps. IP: Logged |
