I've heard alot of talk on how pirhana's need these huge tanks, but what if you have them in a smaller one. Like 3 in a 30 gallon? Or 3 in a 20 Gallon. I know with some kinds of cichlids(misspelled prolly) that if you overcrowd the talk and get a good filter they will fight less because they dont have enough room to be territiorial. Could this be the case with Pirhana's? I am talking about the small pirhana's...which ones are the smallest? IP: Logged |

First, piranhas might breed like cichlids (ie., some build nest and guard young), but that is the closest they come to being cichlid-like. The smallest piranha species is approximately 6 inches (Pristobrycon calmoni). Success with breeding common red-bellies is 55 gallon or more. These fish are sexually active after 6 inches or more in size. The 30 gallon would be much to small for them. The Serrasalmus species which are sexually active at smaller sizes, will also need extra tank space because of their propensity to fin bite or bite off large portions of flesh. One last thing, the smaller tank will not afford breeders space to hide if they are not in the mood. If they are not in the mood, the more aggressive piranha will make a lunch of their mate. Something to seriously reconsider if you are thinking with trying with a tank your size. IP: Logged |

I have a 30 gallon tank with a crowded unhappy oscar that was given to me by a guy who thought he could have three or four oscars in a twenty gallon tank. My tank was empty and cycling in a public school and in desperation he dropped the poor fish in, thinking that I would be happy with it. Needless to say, your biggest enemy will probably be water quality and a need to perform many water changes. I think the pirahna relies on plants to hide behind and needs a tall aquarium above all. Just remember that it's tough to find homes for big orphaned fish. Oh and by the way, I am currently running a 25 gallon tank with 13 african ciclids that seem less agressive in crowded quarters. Although, I don't know how crowding will effect pirahnas. Good luck IP: Logged |
