Im interested in buying pirahnas for a future tank. How many can I fit in a 55 gal tank? Also what filter should be used for that size tank regarding Pirahnas?

Depends on the species of piranhas. Some grow only 8 inches, others exceed 20 inches.

On average, your common red-belly, Pygocentrus nattereri grows to about 10 inches in the aquarium, sometimes full grown at a foot long. What you need to think about is 40-50 gallons per fish at full size. Any outside canister or biofilter is ideal. You don't want to do to much work inside the aquarium. Not that the fish will bite you, but more that these fish are very jittery and easily spooked.

i have a 55 and my boyfriend just bought a black piranha about 5 inches and he doin great by his self.we had 2 others before and 1 would always get picked on. just make sure that it is well planted because they like to hind.we have a fluvel 404 on my tank and it doing great!

I'de say try 3 if you are going for the small Pirhana's and if it gets to small for them they can eat the weakest one. Let me know because I'm curious about having a smaller tank. I guess I'm not a fish expert or huge lover of fish so if one dies I don't care too much.
