i just bought a new tank 3 days ago and i also bought new gravel i washed the gravel off before i put it in. For three days now though the water in the tank smells real chemically which has me worried with my 2 piranahs because i dont watnt them to die. Is the smell mean there is a chemical in my tank? is it gonna kill my piranah? how can i take the chemical out? thanks for the help brian

Baisically I wait at least two weeks on a new tank set up before I add fish. This may seem like a long time, however this gives the good bacteria, that will ultimately keep your fish alive, time to grow! Yes your fish are in danger and the chemicals you smell are the residues off of every new product in your tank being wet for the first time. Take your fish back to wherever you bought them and ask the store owner to keep them for a month. This will give your tank time to "cycle". Run your tank with just water and remember, the waiting is the hardest part.

I dont know much about caring for Pihrana or how to spell it for that matter but on new tanks I always boil the gravel for about 15 minutes on the stove then put it in a stariner and rinse it for about 10 minutes, and on a new tank I rinse it really good with hot water ( with declorinader in it ) then i add the gravel and fill the tank, i run the filters and heater in the new tank for about an hour and i use ammonia and carbon rocks in my filters to help pull out harmful things in the water, then i transfer my fish into the new tank with some of their water they where already in, this works well for me, i have not yet had fish die in a new tank yet, and i have 6 tanks full of fish, from 20 gal all the way to 160 gal.
