it depends on the size of the koi. i have a 55 gallon tank too. i have 10 different types of gold fish, a dojo, a pecostomus, and 4 zebra fish. my gold fish are a pretty good size too. abou 3-4 inches in length. they seem to be doing fine. i also have 3 large pvc pipes for them to swim in and out of. they like those. they look like they have plenty of room to swim around in. if you notice that they are getting teritorial then i would do a large water change and move the items in the tank around.
