The red-bellied piranha is a meat eater. They are the more aggressive Amazon river fish. The Pacu is similar in looks, but that is about it. The Pacu is a cousin to the red-bellied piranha, but it is a herbivore.

When you have a young Pacu, you can feed them regular fish flake food. But as they get older and bigger, you might want to change their diets somewhat.

I feed mine tubiflex worms, blood worms, small amounts of plankton, and some brine shrimp. I know I said that they are herbivores, but mine will eat a little meat too sometimes.

You can also feed them lettuce, chopped zuchinni, strawberries ( yes, strawberries ).

Do not put any fish with the Pacu that are equally aggressive. For instance, I put an Oscar in with mine and the war was on. Mostly the battles were initiated by the Oscar, but the Pacu fended him off every time.

Do not put "Bumblebees" ( yellow-black striped ) in with the Pacu. He shredded both of mine. They looked like fish fillets when he was done with them.

I have an algea eater in the tank and the Pacu doesn't bother him. I also had a Golden Catfish, but he fought some viscious fights with the Pacu. Neither received any real wounds but they would really go at it. They'd slosh water everywhere!

I've got a 30 gallon tank. He has pretty much stabilized in size. About a little over a foot long now, I guess. He's getting fatter, but not longer.

Good luck with the Pacu. Don't worry, they mellow out as they get older. They're really pretty good fish to raise.

Keep your water changes frequent. They distress when the water gets real toxic. Keep the Ph around 7.0 and the water temp around 72-75 degrees and he'll be a happy fish.

Good luck, hope I helped you.

I just purchased a red bellied pacu, and put in a tank with my other fish, thinking that it would be tough enough to live with them, My African Ciclids (?Spelling) who were all much smaller killed him in less than a day, he is not a paranah.

I also have found that they eat small feeder fish or just about any fish at all. They will eat flakes if hungry but they must be large.

I've owned four of these hungry devils and i think they are pirahnas in disguis. mine would eat anything i put in the tank including, fish, snails, bits of oreos, captain crunch cereal, crickets, grasshoppers,or anything else that would fit in their mouth. So I'd say yes they are very pirahna-like and very good pets.
Thanks, Alan Ottmo

I agree.....These fish a very much like piranha. I have seven of them and when feeding time, watch out.
Mine are about 3 1/2" to 4" long and go crazy if I come near the tank. Now they are growing teeth.

i have both red belly paranahs and pacus in the same tank and they look exactly the same, when i got the pacu they were older about 3 months and 3" long, the piranahs were 1 month and 1/2" long, now after 5 monthes the pacus are a foot long and the piranahs are 7" long, they all eat the same food, (raw meat or chicken) and live fine together, the only way to tell them apart is that the piranahs have big teeth that stick out, the pacu have small teeth on the inside of their mouth

Pacu are vegitarian and look like paranahs to survive. Red belly paranahs eat basicly anything. I would go with gold fish, or some kind of cheap unprossesed meat, but gold fish are more fun.

My b/f and I currently have two full grown red bellied pacu. We thought that they were paranah at first. But that is am guesing is just anather common name for them. But they dont act like paranah in the wild, we can stick our hand in the tank and never once have problems. Also we did have them in a 29 gallon tank and it became too small for them so we put them in our 55 tank. And we have a feeling that they will need a much larger tank than that. Good luck e-mail me!

...oops,
I can tell you for sure that your 55gal tank will not house two "red-bellied pacu's" or even one for that matter. For one pacu you should have at least a 150gal tank min.. for two-triple the size.
I have a 110 gal. w/ one pacu that is 9 months old and has out grown the tank already at 15" long. These studs need alot of room.
Ultimatley, the difference between the pirhanna and pacu is un-traceable in respect that no one real knows the hy-brid chain. Only speculation. You will read and hear alot of different opinoions in their differnces. To rap it up in a nut shell, the red bellied pacu is a mild mannered pirhana until they are involved with a school. , Then look out. It is also rumored that the pacu (red bellied only) has "ANIT-QUOAGULENT" in their suliva.
They (paca & pirhana) will eat anything from veggies (they love zuccini-make sure to buy it organic) to earthworms to live fish. I have had great success with crayfish, earthworms, cockroaches, basically any large inscect, and oh yes even live mice (be sure to clean the mice in your sink real well before feeding.
This is getting quite lenghty for a "POST" so if you and or anyone else has comments, questions or suggestions to raising these very intellegent fish, EMAIL me at :road_warrior_1969@hotmail.com.

I have a 75gallon tank and I have 2 Clown Knifes, 2 Tiger Oscars, and 2 Pacu in there. They get along great with each other. Oh I also have 1 Iredecent Shark. Been together now for a little over a year with no casulties. I for the most part feed them all Frozen Blood Worm, and some sinking shrimp pellets for the sharks. The Pacu are very well tempered too, very aggresive with each other but never towards any of the other fish. Basically the way you can tell the difference between a Pacu and a Red Bellied Pirahna is the face. The Pirahna has more of a bottom jaw, well it sticks out further. This is due to their teeth placement.
