the best company for a bala is about 4 more balas. but they also get along great with anything peaceful, from danios to loaches to just about anything that won't attack or harrass it.

a good tank mate for a bala shark is a silver dollar or a red tailed shark

I would not put a red tailed shark in a tank with a peaceful Bala shark. I was told they were both community fish and would be fine together. However, within 48 hours, my red tail had eaten my bala's fins leaving him just a body lying on the bottom of the tank until he died. The sharks were both the same size and added at the same time. Red tail's are aggressive and territorial.
