Something dawned on me yesterday and I want to ask you all that have had a few dogs in your life time a question. Now my poodle used to get brown wax in her ears and was prone to ear in fections. None with the use of Thornit. My terriers ear wax is almost invisable, really only seen if dirt gets on it. My neighbors Min. pinscher gets brown wax and he gets ear infections. Do you see where I am going with this. So, Does your dogs get ear infections and if so what color is its ear wax? Does your dog that has very light ear wax get them?

Only my dogs with dark brown wax got ear infections. My Toy Poodle has light brown and doesn't get them. My Standard Poodle has dark brown and will get ear infections if I don't clean them and keep the hair plucked out. My Shar-Pei had terrible ear infections and had dark brown wax. I think you are on to something here. It looks like at least in my dogs, the ones with dark wax got infections and the ones with light wax did not. I am curious to hear what others have to say.

I am too. Wouldn't that be an interesting thing to know. Say you go to pick out a dog in a litter and just look at the wax, if its brown no ,light yes. That would be interesting if the rest have similar going ons.

Yes you should be getting him used to this type of thing. Clean it out at about once a week. If he has hair inside the ear canal pluck it out. There are ear cleaning fluids that you can put in the ears. Just put it in(they are a liquid many different brands) close the ear and rub it around for a few minutes if possible. Then wipe it out with a wash cloth. You can use a Q-tip to get into the hard to get areas. Don't dig into thear where you can not see though. You can use a powder for ears after, but I have started using thornit powder around three months ago and she no longer gets the wax at all. IMO--- regardless of wax color, you should clean your dogs ears on a regular basis.. I find the wax only turns brownish after the bacteria has already goten into the ears(s). Possibly just somethign to fight it off, or showing that it has already done started taking affect on the puppy. I had a PItbull with clearish colored wax that had the worse case of otitis I have ever encountered and trust me I have been through many.. Jekkyl my current dog had clearer wax, which turned dark brown.. he does have an infection which his treatment will end for tomorrow. The color of his wax is back to light, clearish wax. So I think it is once the bacteria has already gotten into the ear, but the infection has not yet been identified... Could be wrong though! However, another point is that people do not notice dirt and things in the ears as easily with dark colored wax as they do with light colored wax, so they do not get it out and it embeds in the ear canal and causes the infection.. could be another valuable point.. but suggestion/advice is to KEEP YOUR DOGS EARS CLEAN REGARDLES!! Let me know if you all come up with anything.. this interests me to find out the deal with it..

With my poodle I was cleaning out her ears 2 x's a week and the wax was a small amount but always brown. When she had wax in her ears that needed to come out she would even take her foot and scratch her ear very gently and smell it. When ever she did this I would automatically clean it. Her ears did not smell and were not infected. With the thornit powder, she no longer gets brown wax. This is a miracle. I never thought there could be such a product. My terriers ear have basically no wax. His are the way you explained your dogs clear.
And yes clean your dogs ears reguardless of wether they have gunk coming out. With my terrier allhe needs is after a bath to take my pinky finger covered with a towel and dry up his ear and anything in there come off in the towel.
Another thing Main pit bull: the times that my poodle did have an ear infection, always after and thru the meds she always had the dark wax. It did not ever go away. Thru the pills and ear drops. I'm happy with what I have found for her.
