Hi, I am brand new to this message board, and I am looking to welcome a shih-poo puppy into my family, although I am having probelms finding one, with out going to a pet store. I did find one "breeder?", in my area, they have a website, but after looking over some info on puppy mills, I am nervous that this may be one. Their web site is; www.rainbowpark.ca
If anyone out there has experience in diagnosing a puppy mill, please review the website and let me knwo what you think. Also, if anyone has info on where I can get a healthy shih-poo puppy in teh Toronto, please let me know...

Thanks!

One good thing is that they don't have puppies available all the time. A good breeder always has a home for her puppies before they are born. One thing that bugs me though is she has so many different breeds. Why breed so many. How could they have time to spare to give all these animals the attention they need? If its possible at all make a trip over there and see for yourself if it seems to be a clean and tidy area, if the dogs are kept clean.Ask for some referals of people that have bought from them. A good breeder will ask you as many questions as you ask them and will want to know if you are worthy of one of their pups. See it in person to know for sure. On their site everything looks great, but they also knew when the crew was coming and had time to make the dogs presentable if they weren't before. They do look fine in the pictures though. Ask also if their breeding dogs are vet checked and certified for breeding, and have they any proof that their dogs have placed in any dog shows, those are the dogs that should be bred if any, the ones that are looked upon as being perfect for their breed standard. Even though she is mixing, you want each parent to have perfect health. Vet bills can be very expensive, so ask away.

I am also searching for a shih-poo breeder.. although, I do have one that is "top" on my list.

I did come across the website you gave yesterday, but I am not sure how to diagnose a puppy mill.

The thing that put the breeder I am looking into at the top of my list is that she only has toy poodles, shih-tzu, shih-poos & schnoodles. That being said, I have been shying away from breeders that offer so many dogs that I can't even count.

Another thing is that the breeder that is at the top of my list is very strict - meaning, she will not just "ship her puppies" - either my husband or myself need to fly home with our pup. That's just one example that shows the puppy's safety & well-being comes first. The more breeders sites I view, the more I can tell who cares and who is in it just for the money. Keep researching and good luck to you!

Utterly sickening. Most definitely a puppy mill or commercial breeder (ultimately the same thing) !

6 possibly 7 litters in August alone (that is the first clue)
13??? litters in Sept. Oh my gosh. Did i read that right?? A good breeder with good dogs worthy of breeding doesn't need that many dogs. Remember even if the place is kept immaculately clean it can still be a puppy mill.

I'll never understand why a breeder need to breed more than one type of dog. I could accept 2 types if they seldom bred. Most reputable breeders do not breed more than once a year. Do the parents get to live like dogs and grow with human attention and love or are they raised in kennels and crates with minimum attention? There is no way anyone could give enough attention handling and hand raising to that many litters or the parents. Nor could they afford to test the breeding dogs for genetic diseases. Hip & elbow, eye, hearing, thyroid, heart, palette, are just some of the diseases and conditions many of these breeds are affected by. I agree with Puttin, a reputable breeder would put the time and money into screening their dogs to make sure they are not passing on anything. Puppy mills and BYBs do not do care enough to test as it would definitely eat into profits.

One thing most buyers want is to know that the breeder will be there for them if they have questions or concerns. I sincerely doubt this type of breeder will make the time to be there for the life of a family's dog.

I've never heard of a breeder accepting Visa. Please don't buy from this puppy mill! Have you tried www.petfinder.com - by typing in your location and "poodle" it will bring up all poodles and poodle mixes of all ages available for adoption. Contact Poodle rescue also since many Rescue workers come across poodle x dogs.

What I noticed about the breeders website was she said " (pups will be 7 wks. old on the following dates. Pick-up dates are subject to change.)" 7 wks is way to young! It should be 12 wks old. And she had more than just one breed. A good breeder will pick one breed and try to do their best with it, not 4 or 5 breeds. And I agree with Jas about how many litters are coming in one months time! BTW have u checked ur local shelter ?

12 different breeds, I don't need to look any more. Cute as they are, that little black one wearing the shirt. That is just too many different breeds to be taking care of. If I bred any dog I would be so into it, as much as I was giving birth to my own children. It would be such a remarkable moment for me. I would not even do it if I knew that after I would be wondering where thses little ones would go. Any birth should be a special one. Thats got to be a byb or puppymill
