My friend and I had sleeping bags on the floor in the living room last night and we went to sit down but saw puddles of pee on both of them! We cleaned it up not knowing if it was Tia(moms yorkie) or Alex. (FYI tia is fixed) But then later my mom said she saw Alex go and pee on mine again. So here is my question is this him "marking" his things. Is he ready to get fixed? Both of his "privates" haven't dropped yet. I do see one coming down but not both so far. Do I need to wait to get him fixed when both come down? Is he marking?

I have not dealt with little puppy issues. The only time my terrier marked anything here is when my sisters dog(male) came over and marked my couch, so Rufus felt it was his obligation to mark it as his turf. Also accasionally he will go into my boys room and pee on their backpack. Actually its usually my oldest sons stuff that gets doused(sp). This is very occasional. Rufus had been neutered before he was 1 I know that. He was already done when he came to the shelter. now this is just my view but I believe it was done as soon as it is possible, because his genitles are very small. My sisters min. poodle is bigger down there and he is only half rufus' weight. Thats fine with me not to have that thing any bigger than it is. I do think Alex is marking and they do say it lessens after neutering. I hope someone with more knowledge about this pops in. IP: Logged |

Hi Lyndsey. Here's my experience... Baxter was neutered as early as possible - on his 4 month birthday. He was still a "squatter" at that time. We have been going for walks since he was about 10 weeks old, and he would sometimes "mark" on the walks (squatting), long before he was neutered. He is now 9-1/2 months old and has been lifting his leg to mark on the walks for the last couple of months. More and more each time. BUT - he has never marked in the house (that I know of) and he continues to squat when he's pottying in the backyard or on his pooch pad in the house (when I'm gone for long periods). I had him neutered so early to try and stop the marking/lifting of the leg before it started, but it was too late - even at only 4 months! Hope this helps you. Diane IP: Logged |

Actually, he is probably marking you and not the sleeping bag. Letting your friend know that you are his human and not hers....funny eh? I had one of my dogs do that to me in a training class. He lifted his leg and peed right on me. The trainer said that he was letting all the other dogs know in the class that I belonged to him...again ...marking territory. IP: Logged |

If you don't keep the sleeping bags on the floor every day - if they are new to him, he may have marked them as 'his' letting everyone know that he accepts them there? You should get him neutered at around 6 months, as this is thought to be the best age. Because you are removing much of his testosterone, he won't feel the need to prove how man he is to everyone, and mark everything he comes across. BUT if marking has already developed into a habit it will be hard to break. I don't think you have to wait for them to drop, if they are 'up' it will be harder to do the operation - it will be more like spaying. Hope this helps! IP: Logged |

Sebastian used to mark in his previous home...not too much but he did it occasionaly. Then they got a second dog and he starting marking everywhere. He was 5yrs old before they finally got him neutered and it decreased his marking but did'nt stop it. He then moved in with me and I had to keep him enclosed in the kitchen because he would mark in any other part of the house but once he became adjusted to his new home it stopped. He has not marked anything (in the house) in a very long time. I guess my point is...that even if he starts marking before you get him neutered it is not really an indication that he will continue to mark indoors after he is neutered. IP: Logged |
