this weekend i went away, and the secretary at work offered to watch winnie. (she LOVES my dog..) anyway, when she would put winnie in her crate to go "night-night" (yes, she knows that!!!), she would whine, hit the crate door and keep the "babysitter" up all night. so she put a blanket next to her bed with one of her toys that she often uses for a pillow, and winnie slept there for two nights!! she didnt even get up and try to go to the bathroom in her room. SO today when i got back from my trip, i bought her a dog bed. my mother said that i am making the biggest mistake of my life..(ok, maybe not the BIGGEST, but A mistake...)~~ SO, is it too soon for her to have a bed? she stays in her crate during the day when i dont take her to work..i feel awful leaving her in there all night long then all day the next day...tonight is going to be the first night in her "big girl bed"..i will give an update tomorrow! any advice would be great!!! my puppy is 6 months old and he hasen't slept in his crate for 2 months.if the puppy seems to be doing ok out of her crate it's ok to leave her out.but you shouldn't leave her in her crate while your at work. puppy's should only be left alone in their crate only about 4-5 hours at the most.it could cause behavior problems.you could try buying a baby gate and putting her in a safe room while your at work or have a friend come over during the day to let her out for a while. She is so good at staying in her crate all day. Unfortunately I had to do that from the beginning. I did, however, come home during lunch to let her out. I have had NO behavior problems with her. In the VERY beginning I tried the baby gate thing. It worked while she was small, but as she grew she learned some tricks on how to get out. I feel that I have done a good job thus far with winnie, either in the crate all day or with me at work. sometimes some deviations from the rules seem to work out just fine. IP: Logged |

My two also sleep in my bed. If its hot my poodle goes from spot to spot. I did not think she would even sleep in a bed of her own, but about a 1 1/2 years after getting her I got her a pretty leopard print one. Granted my terrier had one from the first few months of being here and he loves his bed all thru the day. But I put the bed down and said to sasha. Come over here and I patted the bed and on she went. She did some of her own fluffing of her bed and she just loves it from then to now. She, I think likes to know that its there if she wants it. She is one of those dogs that likes to lay on top of all the pillows on the couch, but she always stop by (her bed). You can always keep the crate for times when she feels insecure and wants to hide or something. Or for trips. I would not feel bad if I were you. IP: Logged |

winnie isnt used to her dog bed yet. she took a little nap in it and then hopped up with me. if i roll over to "her side" she stretches out her legs and pushes me away!!!! she too moves from spot to spot. sometimes she wil be at the end of the bed, up at the top with her head on a pillow or, my favorite, she will snuggle up to me with her back against mine!!! julia.. i say if you don't have a problem with her sleeping out of the crate then there shouldn't be an issue.. my parents' dog moves around the bed all night long and might pee in the room if she doesn't sleep in her room (which is a laundry room with her bed and blankies).. however, bella, my pup, sleeps in bed with me every night.. she has her own bed next to my bed that she can go into but she loves going under the covers and putting her head on a pillow next to mine, snuggling real close with me..
