Hi everyone. As many of you know, I have a 5 month old malt tzu and an 8 month old maltepoo. They love to go for walks around the block, sniffing everything along the way. And there's my new problem! Baxter & Graysie went to the groomer this morning - it's been 5 weeks since the last visit. She just called and said she found about 6-8 fleas on Baxter (the maltepoo)! Funny thing is, she didn't find any on Graysie, so she thinks he may have just contracted them. We have Advantix at home, ready to be given (we were just waiting until after the groomer visit) but I am paranoid now that my house will become infested! I haven't seen any fleas in the house, but do I need to do something quick to avoid that? My husband has already taken all their bedding and washed it. Baxter has been given Advantix before - about 3 months ago (Graysie had flea bites when we got her). The vet tech said I really didn't need to administer it each month, just wait until I saw one and then give it to both of them to get rid of the fleas. Does that mean it'll kill any in the house? Attracting them to the dogs, where the medicine kills them? I am confused. Please help. Any input will be appreciated. Diane in Houston P.S. well i haven't had any experience with it but i'm guessing that if there are any in the house they will end up on your dog at some point and if your using the meds. that will kill them.or you could try spraying down your carpets with flea spray. IP: Logged |

dbuzz.. i live in an area that has fleas all year long.. bella gets frontline once a month, as do most dogs living in south florida.. from my experience if you find just a few fleas on the dog, as in your case, then the advantage should take care of it and the extra step of cleaning the bedding should be great.. if you have a lot of concern you can get your yard sprayed (if you have one) and there are products to put on carpet (if you have) which is one place fleas love to hide and lastly wash the dogs with flea shampoo, i have ZODIAC flea and tick shampoo which works great but follow the directions on the bottle.. most likely if you haven't gotten bitten than the place isn't totally infested.. since it sounds like you don't have a huge flea problem my suggestion would be to keep both dogs on some sort of flea protection program and give it every three months (which is the suggested treatment for dogs in areas not completely flea infested).. if you notice fleas then give it more often, but never more than once a month.. i have also heard that a small amount of garlic in their diet may help deter fleas.. to note.. the advantage won't kill fleas in the house, but fleas can't live unless they bite so most likely they will jump on the dogs and bite.. i believe once they bite a dog treated with advantage they will die.. Hi, Bellasmommy has it right. My dogs have always been on the Heartworm/flea medication, which is administered orally or on the skin, depending on which one you use. The dog gets it once a month for 6 months, (during flea/tick/mosquito season), I swear by it....never had a flea problem for the last 17 yrs. If a flea does bite the dog it will either die or will not be able to reproduce, therefore stopping any infestation. Lot's of websites with this type of info. Good Luck IP: Logged |

Great advise above. We use advantage on ours. Not sure how good advantex is. Someone told me she had heard of two dogs getting sick or something on it. So I don't know maybe after it has been around for a long time. You do know that it is a new product right? I usually apply about every 4 or 5 weeks. Once I see a flea for sure. I can always tell if the advantage is working or not too. If I find a flea on them and it is very slow, that mean it had bit my dog and is going to die. If its fast(hard to catch) time for more. Thank you all for the advice! Bellasmommy, we also live in a big flea area - Texas! In fact, the groomer said they are particularly bad this year. I'm going to put Baxter & Graysie on the once a month Advantix program (I'm not sure why the vet didn't recommend it - maybe because they're almost always inside?). Puttin, what stories have you heard about Advantix? They seem to both be fine now and Baxter had it once before. I chose Advantix over Advantage primarily for the mosquito protection - those are really bad here! Again, thank you all for the advice. I'm not feeling quite so paranoid now! IP: Logged |

My mother tried advantix and it did absolutely nothing. Though maybe it will on your dog, I really don't know. I like Frontlines and Frontline plus the best. We ordered some frontline plus from the internet that said for dogs 1-22 lbs. However we researed after we got it, and found that many websites has the same package for dogs (11)-22 lbs. but, we went a head and gave them to our dogs but didnt quite use the full tube. I read somewhere that Frontline Plus is actually repackaging the tubes to be for "0-22 lbs" instead of "11-22 lbs". I remember reading (??can't remember where??) that people have even called Frontline and verified this. IP: Logged |
